The easy solution is of course to get an external wifi usb adapter. Question is, if I connect it, will it easily recognise it or could there be issues with the surface still trying to use the faulty integrated one?
Cheers

Depends on two things, what if anything is wrong with the internal device and have the drivers for the internal device been uninstalled before connecting the USB device.

To add to what @phillpower2 has stated you may also disable the internal WiFi device.

When you state it does not work not holding connection?
poor connections?
Slow connection?
Range?
Doesn’t hold connection. We tried everything. Updating drivers, reinstalling drivers, rollback, system restore...

no, the PC will pick whatever wifi adapter is working and set with the network name and password.
and as Rustys has siad, you can also set it to Disable in Network & Sharing Centre.
but if it's under warranty still, I'd be wanting it fixed, Surface Pro's aren't cheap.

What command(s) have you tried?
Have you reset the entire network?
Is the system set with a static and or dynamic IP address?

What is the distance for the system to the WiFi server?
What does the signal have to go through?
Doesn’t hold connection.
How long does it hold the connection?

I agree with Bruce if under warranty contact them and get it fixed. you can always have the USB which are horrible under power and low range. as a back up.
