Hi,

I've got a HP Steam laptop and tried to reset it to factory settings upon it restarting it failed to bott saying a device was missing.
I had to put Windows on USB drive to try start up repair, chkdsk and SFC scannow and all failed.

When I turn the laptop on it just loads the ho logo then waits 5 seconds then restarts again.

What's my options? How would I install windows with no product key as there isn't one on the laptop casing?

Hello Jaymie1989,

How would I install windows with no product key as there isn't one on the laptop casing?
Since Windows 8 OEM brands such as HP etc stopped putting product key stickers on computers as they embed them on the BIOS chip.

If trying to install from a USB device you should try disabling secure boot, not all BIOS settings are the same and the steps below are only one such an example;

For computers that have UEFI as opposed to legacy BIOS, to be able to boot from your USB device you may need to disable secure boot and change UEFI to CSM Boot, not all computers and BIOS are the same, please refer to your user manual if you have one as the following steps are only one such example.

Restart the computer, Windows 8 and 8.1 from the Start or desktop screen move your mouse pointer over the upper or lower right corner of the screen, when the Windows Charms appear click the Settings Charm, click on Power and then the Restart option.

Windows 10, Click on Start,Power and then Restart.

While the computer is re-starting,you will need to continually tap or hold down the particular key that will allow you to access the BIOS on your computer, we will use the F2 key as an example here;
After restarting the computer, when the screen goes black, press and hold down the F2 key, wait for the BIOS to load.

Select Security -> Secure Boot and then Disabled.

Select Advanced -> System Configuration and then Boot Mode.

Change UEFI Boot to CSM Boot.

Save the changes and Exit the BIOS, commonly F10.

If your computer will not boot into Windows at all, power up or restart the computer continually tap or hold down the key that will allow you to access the BIOS on your computer and then do the following;

Select Security -> Secure Boot and then Disabled.

Select Advanced -> System Configuration and then Boot Mode.

Change UEFI Boot to CSM Boot.

Save the changes and Exit the BIOS, commonly F10.

Managed to reinstall windows 10 via USB.
The problem I have is the mouse pad doesn't work. I've installed the driver. I'm wondering if that was the missing "device" that the error was saying?

Also I've noticed the WiFi is crap and the laptop is only 10ft from the router. All other devices don't have an issue.

When I opened the laptop there was only the black antenna cable and no white one???
