I have an HP Altec. It freezes up when you stop using it. I have to pull the plug or take the battery out. I was running windows update when it first did this. I've uninstalled the updates it kept doing it. Reinstalled the updates- kept doing it. Ran Mcafee and Malwarebytes and had no bugs- kept doing it. Ran CCleaner fixed problems- kept doing it. Ran HP Solutions and did everything there except for updating BIOS- kept doing it. Made sure all drivers were up to date- kept doing it. Ran a program that checked for registry errors and fixed that- kept doing it. Finally reinstalled Windows 10 and it is still doing it.

What do I do now??

Finally reinstalled Windows 10 and it is still doing it.
How and from what?

Did you install drivers in the proper order starting with the Chipsets first?

kept doing it. Made sure all drivers were up to date
How and from where?

Ran a program that checked for registry errors and fixed that
snake oil and crap ware ending up doing more damage than they repair.

Any third-party cleaning software should be used with caution they can and have been known to remove necessary files for windows to work properly.

Do not forget to post the make and model of the PSU if this is a desktop.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Lets alos get some of the error messages using the Minitoolbox

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop. Right click on the file and select Run as Admin

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options.

Select all

Click on Go.

copy and paste the contents of the file called MTB.txt or attach the file to your next post.

26-02-2023 20:08:19 Windows Modules Installer

**** End of log ****

all programs I ran on this laptop were from HP Solutions. I updated Windows whenever there was a new update available. The drivers were whatever the program said need updated. I only use this laptop for the boys schoolwork. Only have the basics installed. No special programs or devices, not even a printer.

The drivers were whatever the program said need updated.
never update a driver unless you are experiencing issues. As you can see installing updates can cause issues and just because a program says to does not mean that it is reading the proper drivers and or getting it from the proper place.

It is showing issues updating and activation issues.

You can try a System file Checker, see if that helps.

The only option is to factory reset the system like @georgeks suggested.

Guess I will do a factory reset. This all started when it was doing a windows update. I hate laptops to start with.

Why did you run sfc.exe and not like the instruction state
sfc /scannow

Might also try right clicking on command prompt and selecting Run and Administrator then attempt the command.

To clarify. I bought this laptop used. It was running fine until I updated windows. That's when it started freezing up. I have reformatted the hard drive. Reinstalled Windows 8.1 and it worked fine. Had it on all night hooked to outlet. It shut down normal. No freezing. Did an upgrade to Windows 10 Version 22H2. Now it is freezing up again. Here is the new Speccy file:

05-03-2023 23:08:33 Windows Update

**** End of log ****

What are the specific make and model of this system.

Have you checked to see if there is a BIOS update that maybe needed for Windows 10 to run properly?

Where did and how was the Windows 10 media created?

If you upgraded from windows 8 to 10 that can sometimes cause issues.

Best to perform a clean install.

RAM
4.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Physical Memory
Memory Usage: 48 %
Total Physical: 3.89 GB
Available Physical: 2.00 GB

Suggest getting a matching RAM to have the system running Dual Channel and not Single Channel. Which can also sometimes cut the speed of the ram in half as well which is why you should always use RAM in pairs.

The laptop is a HP Pavilion 14 Touch Screen. I have done nothing with the BIOS because the machine would randomly freeze up and I would have to unplug it to start again and I know that will mess up a BIOS upgrade. I used Microsoft website to do the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I can do a clean install but it will be Version 22H2 which is what it was updating with when the trouble started. As for the Ram, I'm not putting any more money into this machine. We only use it for accessing his school website.

Serial number where we can look up the specific system information.

Now the laptop won't turn on at all so I'm just going to take it to the recycle bin and buy a new desktop. Thanks.
