Not sure if this is the right place but I'm new here because I'm kind of desperate for help.

On my external hard drive I have a couple of folders that I can't open and they are in xep-files for some reasons. What is that and how do I get them back? I have tried searching on both Google and YouTube, but have found but nothing has helped for example, I did a simple scan control on the hard drive if there is any problems with the system but there does not seem to be any so it is just that it is the xep files that can't open. I have tried searching how to open xep-files but can't find anything so instead I searche how to fix and open corrupted files and stuff. I have tried file opener programs, free recovery programs etc. Btw, I am not a "tech person" or whatever. I think these problems with the folders started when I tried to decompress them or something (the folders are quite big) and then open and I guess something just went wrong. It was a time ago so I don't remember exactly how. These folders still have stuff in them, I just can't open them and access the files. I have no idea what xep even is and I don't seem to find much information about it online as well unlike other file types. I am trying to declutter and organize my hard drive and these are just annoying me right now but I have not yet not had the courage to delete them from the hard drive since I know there are a lot of files in there. Btw, it is not EVERY folder on my hard drive, just a couple so it is not wrong with the hard drive itself I believe just the process went wrong somewhere I guess.

These are just two of them but they all have white empty document icon instead of the normal folder icon and they all end with .xep and I can't open them at all. Please help me!! I'm so lost and frustrated.

I found that website when researching and already tried that, but the folders are way too big for that. How do open large xep-files and xep-folders? Also, I still don't even know what XenoDream Graphics Data file means and how to fix it.

How do I even download and use it? Is there really no other way?? I even tried following a tutorial on how to use DMDE but it just makes the same folder on the desktop instead with the same xep-file and does not fix the problem. At this point I kind of just want to give up and just delete all the folders but I know know.

If you know that there’s nothing in the folders which you wish to keep then you should be able to right click on the folder & delete them one by one.

Well I do wish to keep the stuff in the folders, that's why I am asking for help. I just simply can't find any solution at all. I have tried searching for help on two different forums, I guess no one knows the answer either. ****.

I’m sorry but I’ve given you the answer & provided the link. You can download the software which will then allow you to open the files.
Tbh I don’t know what answer you’re looking for if none of my answers help.

Where did these XEP files come from?
Did you create them or get them from somewhere else?
Were you ever able to open them?
How old are they?

I don't exactly remember how but I was going to transfer my folders from desktop to external hard drive and I think on the hard drive I was going to decompress them since they are quite big and takes up a lot of space. I think it might have happened when I was trying to open them again or something but I'm not sure, I think it was one or two years ago, possibly one year ago. I guess maybe something when wrong, I can't remember exactly how it went for them to become xep-files. It is just a weird file format. The program I used when trying to decompress them was either WinRAR or 7-Zip, my guess it could have been 7-Zip. Now when I am trying to open them, they just want me to choose a program but no program seems to be working. I have tried different file opener programs, file recovery programs etc. No, I have never been able to open them since they become .xep folders. I have different files in those folders - documents, pictures, movies etc. so not just one type of files. I have even tried online website to change the file format but of course they never had any options of xep-files. I have not had the courage to just get rid of them before trying a lot of stuff which all have failed. I'm disappointed and feel hopeless right now.

I don't know what I'm looking for either, nothing just seems to work! I just looking for anything that can make them back to normal, but what that is I don't know since I don't know what the problem is or anything. That's why I asking for help, I thought maybe somone knew the issue and the solution. I guess they seems to be inpossible to open for some reason.

In your links you should download XenoDream but how do I even find the download for it?? That website did not include links to any of the programs which were mentioned which is not really helpful. Do you know anything about it? It would be great if you could link downloads for me!

I've tried File Viewer Plus 5 and File View Pro (free version - not sure if it only works with the paid version) which does not work. I've tried a lot of stuff - for example, scanning the external hard dive, different recovery programs etc. Wtf is wrong. I feel hopless about this. .xep-files seems impossible to fix for some reason and is fkng annoying.

Sounds like they are not needed, since you don't know what they contain or where they came from. :)
My thoughts are you either just keep them 'just in case' or get rid of them.

How big are they?

You seem to think they were 'created' by something you did, if so, it means you have the files used in the first place that created them.
For example, 'if' these XEP files were slideshows (just spit balling here) then you should still have the pictures used to create that output still.

I have 11 .xep-folders. I see now that four of them have 0 byte in them... but the rest of the folders;

293 MB
10 GB
22.9 GB
22.9 GB
3.53 GB
5.59 GB

They did work before when I had them on my desktop and did not try to change them or anything. When I open them, they just want me to choose a program to open them with but no program seems to work with .xep-files.

So weird to have a bunch of folders that you just simply can't get into but used to work. I did tranfer them on my external hard drive from desktop in the first place because they were taking up a lot of space. These used to be normal folders with a lot of other file types in them, text files, video files etc. so I do know what they original come from, I just don't know where the FILE TYPE came from! Not the folders! I want to get them back to NORMAL. I am trying to organize and declutter my external hard drive so these are just annoying.

Links pointed to Bing search as the site doesn’t host the files to download:
https://xenodream.com/downloads.htm it’s a trial version but should allow you to open the files.
I can’t see how corruption would change the file type. What type of file should they be - photo, audio etc?
You could reset the files extention but this may make things worse if the .xep is the genuine file extension or you don’t know what the original file type was.

You open files with this? Is this even the right program??

How does this program even works? Looks too complicated for me. I tried looking for my .xep files on the external hard drive using the program but I can't even choose the folders because they are not there if I use the program.

Well the folders contain normal files like txt, jpg, png, mp4 etc. Everything from texdocuments, pdf files, audio etc. The problem is that that they are all in a FOLDER and I can't even open the FOLDER which is in .xep. And that folder is just simply normal folder?? What file type is even folders?

This is how folders supposed to look like! But those folders I got problems with looks instead like this.

I should just try stopping to get the folders back to normal at this point and accept loosing my files.

It’s the program recommended for opening that file extension. As we don’t know what you did to change that extension we can only advise on what programs may work. If you right click on the folder does it offer to open in that program?
Is there any chance this is due to malware infection?

Those file sizes would suggest they were ZIP's, or VOB's (DVD files), or maybe even VHD (virtual hard drive from VM software).
You could try renaming the extension and seeing if you get lucky.

Those names "ny mapp" translate to "the map" - were they GPS maps or something?
Or saved video tour from Google Earth?

I'm Swedish and "ny mapp" just mean "new folder" haha. No, they are just normal computer folders with files in them. Yes you are right, they used to be ZIP's. I think it when wrong somewhere when I used WinRAR or 7-Zip, I think possible used 7-Zip.

I tried to change the format from .xep to .7z but it looks the same and when tried to pack up the files in that program, it just says that I can't open the file that is a [7z]-archive. What does that even mean?

I kind of want to delete them all right now tbh. I've been trying so many different solutions, trying so many different programs, nothing works. I guess it is time to just give up and simply get rid of them so I don't have to deal with this anymore. I'm just tired of this.
