Hi there. Bought a laptop for christmas a couple weeks ago and have been saving it for today. So far in the last 3 hours it has crashed 3 times. Heres the rundown, specs at bottom.

First time booted it up downloaded mozilla. Then downloaded steam, then epic. After logging in to steam the whole pc shut off itself after the fans became extremely loud.

Booted it up again, this time simply logged in to epic and the same thing happened.

After that I tried downloading memtest and real temp. Temp hovering at 40 up to 60 while running memtest although it hit 80 at one point when I was running a 9000 test. No errors with the memory. So I went onto Firefox again to have a look for a cpu testing app and boom, crashes to black. This time it didn't shut off but instead went black with the fan running loud even though it was only at 50 before it crashed. Had to turn it off myself.

Have now downloaded and run the Intel processor check and all seems to fine there it passed all tests hit at one point 91 degrees though but hovered around 60 when doin. the test.

So where do I go from here? What should I test? Any help is massively appreciated. Merry Christmas.

Specs;

Intel I7 9750H
16GB RAM
NVIDIA 1650
1tb hard drive
(Not sure what else is needed if you want any more specs ask)

Hello

The laptop is definitely over heating.. I would suggest that you if you can just start with the basics and see how it runs..

Thanks. With absolutely nothing open its at an idle 30. With mozilla running that goes up to a 40. With steam open it goes up to around 45.

Ok i would suggest that you use your warranty . Was this laptop sold as a gaming laptop?

Yes. I have bought a cooling mat for it to see if this works which will arrive on Sunday.

I have just had an experience where booting up a very low demand game the temperature stayed at 45 to 50 but the fans seemed to suddenly go at full speed. Is it possible tjere is an issue with them and they're incorrectly triggering the fail safe to shut down the laptop? None of the times it has crashed have been at a high temp

Ok either way, this laptop should not be running this way at all, assuming it is new..

Its refurbished. All the diagnostics seem good on it. I've checked each part separately and all are running well with no errors. Is it running hotter than it should be at an idle state?

With the laptop being refurbished it's hard to tell if that would be the normal temp, especially when you are trying to run those games.. Maybe the cooling pad will do the trick.. if not take it back..

Okay thanks very much for your help. I will try the cooling pad but if not will take it back. Hope you have a great Christmas thanks for taking ytime out of your day to help

Intel I7 9750H

The thermal trigger for this CPU is 100°C so something else is amiss.

If the main battery is easily removable try removing it and powering the notebook using the AC adaptor and see if it makes any difference, we could also do with you doing the below as well Patsl0508.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.
