Hi,
I'm currently having framerate issues whilst using an external monitor from my laptop.
Framerates as low as 30. I was just wondering whether using an external monitor could be the reason why my framerates are dropping so low? No issues when playing through the laptop monitor.
Connected through HDMI cable.

Specs:
Vyper Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD 144Hz 72% NTSC LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Intel® Core™ i7 Eight Core Processor 10875H (2.3GHz, 5.1GHz Turbo)
NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2080 Max-Q - 8.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1

External monitor:
AOC M2470SWH 23.6 Inch Widescreen MVA LED Black Multimedia Monitor (1920 x 1080/5ms/VGA/2xHDMI) Built in Speakers

Hello ryan.buckley,

Your suspicions are entirely possible as the RTX 2080 Max-Q is designed to function using less power, see info here

Others may have alternative suggestions but all that I can think of is making sure that when you are gaming etc that you change the Windows to Ultra or High Performance so that the discrete graphics chip get the power that it needs.

I changed my performance from high to ultimate and still no change I've ordered a new monitor with a higher refresh rate which is due to be delivered tomorrow so I will see if that makes any difference.
Thanks for the help!

We don`t know your model of notebook so can`t check the specs but if it has Display Ports make sure that any monitor that you purchase also has at least one DP which are better than HDMI.

Will look out for your update tomorrow and meanwhile you are welcome :)

Installed my monitor and instantly improved frame rates, running on ultra graphics settings and getting 90FPS.
The monitor was low quality so I’m guessing that was the reason, thankyou for the help Phillpower!
for anyone reading and having the same problems I’ll post both monitors so you can compare.

Old:

AOC M2470SWH - 24 Inch FHD Monitor, 60 Hz,5ms, MVA, Speakers ( 1920 x 1080@ 60 Hz, 250cd/m², HDMI 1.4 x 2/ VGA)

New:

Pixio PX248 Prime 24 inch 144Hz IPS 1ms FHD 1080p AMD Radeon FreeSync Esports IPS Gaming Monitor

Glad to hear that you got sorted and thanks for letting us know (y)

Are you using the display port on the new monitor.

In addition to what you have post above and something that others with an Nvidea GPU like yourself should know, your new monitor is compatible with both AMD FreeSync & Nvidea GSync and that if it were only compatible with AMD Freesync as the info above suggests you may not get the performance that you are, it is a strong selling point so really not sure why the seller is not promoting the fact.

You are welcome btw :)

It’s through HDMI. My new monitor has DP, unfortunately my laptop does not!
Ahh okay, I wasn’t aware of that either lucky find!
Thanks again,
Ryan.
