Updated bios ver to work with CPU, after the update, cpu fan and pwr indicator turn on, shutdown will not work, eventually it turns off by itself. Now when I turn it on everything lights up, black screen, turns off by itself after 10s.

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, MB, the RAM (including the amount) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable folk to better assist you.

So this is a totally new build that has never been assembled before today.

Your RAM link is not working, do you have another one.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.
 
RAM is compatible so that can be ruled out.

Can I just make sure that you have a keyboard connected, if yes and it is a USB type make sure that it is connected to a black USB 2.0 port.

Have you checked that the CPU cooling fan is connected to the correct fan header on the MB.
 
I do not have a keyboard connected. The CPU cooling fan is running and lit up, so I assume it's connected, but idk.
 
You have to have a keyboard connected or the power on self test (POST) will fail.

Question, how were you planning on getting set up and installing Windows without a keyboard.
 
I was planning on plugging it in after, and I don't know what post is. ;-:
Tried turning it on with a keyboard, and got the same result.
 
You not even getting a BIOS screen is bad news.

If you don`t know what POST is you really should have done some research before embarking on this, a link to what POST is was provided in my reply #10 (POST)

You not knowing what POST is means that you will have zero idea as to what a barebones set up is and that is something that should have been done before assembling inside of the case.

The above needs to be connected to the CPU fan header on the MB so that the BIOS can read the temps.

Now we know that you have a keyboard attached but the behaviour is the same there is either a system short or the BIOS flash went wrong and bricked the motherboard.
 
I watched a LTT video on assembly, sorry. ;-: does that mean the motherboard is trash

We can`t say because we don`t know what has gone on and fwiw someone that has never built a computer before should not be flashing the BIOS, even a tech needs to be careful when doing this as it is so easy to brick the motherboard.

Below are my canned steps for doing a Barebones, give it a go if you wish but being honest I feel that you could do with some experienced help with you to help you hands on.

Remove the MB and do a barebones set-up on a piece of cardboard (make sure it is larger than the MB) only connect the PSU, the GFX card, screen, 1 stick of RAM and the keyboard.

IF your MB doesn`t have a power test switch you will then need to short out the 2 power on pins on the MB header to get the PSU to activate, you can use a small flat bladed screwdriver or a paper clip bent into a U shape, this is perfectly safe if you do not touch anything else, the idea is to see if we can get a BIOS screen if you do you can then add one component at a time until you find the problem component, you must power down and remove the power cord from the wall before adding another component,

Other things worth checking include, if you used stand offs beneath the MB are they in the correct locations (only where there is a screw hole in the MB) otherwise the MB will short out, check for stray screws or bared wires for the same reason, make sure the jumper cap that can be used for clearing the CMOS is not missing or on the wrong pins and finally try removing the CMOS battery for a few moments and then replace it, this will clear any possible bad MB settings.

If after checking all the above the issue is not resolved I would suspect a bad MB or CPU.
