Hi All - treat me gently
I have an old Advent 5301 Laptop with XP installed.
It no longer recognises the DVD Drive.
If I put a disc in the drive it starts to run but nothing is showing on screen. The same thing happens if I use an external DVD Drive.
I have tried to restore to a previous time/date but without any luck.
So I thought I'd best ask the experts....

What error messages if any do you get?

Have you checked the logs for errors or warnings to see if they shed any light on this?

From the Start menu
Right click on My Computer
Select Mange
on the left side select Event Viewer
Look through the logs and see if any refer to the CD/DVD.

Next on the left side select Device Manager
Look under DVD/CD-ROMS Drives
Is it listed there?
Is there a Red X or Yellow !?

If it reads the DVD but will not play it, perhaps auto start is turned off.

If you open the contents of a DVD using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) can you find an exe file, click on it, and will it then play?

Hi Guys
Again thanks for the info
Checked Event Viewer, nothing listed / showing.
Checked Device Manager: DVD/CD-ROM Drives, the drive was listed but clear.
I updated the drivers and you guys have sorted the problem.
Have tried various DVD's/CD's and all are working.... Many Thanks
