I recently bought a second monitor to use on my Windows 10 system. I want to set it up so both monitors work independently of each other so two programs can be displayed at the same time with the second one in portrait mode. I have tried all the settings under "Display Settings" in the control panel but none of them seem to do what I need. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply and link. However the link only covered what I had already done via the Control Panel. The only choices there are to "Duplicate" what is on monitor 1 on monitor 2 like if you are sharing data with someone else or "Extend" across both monitors like when using an extra wide spreadsheet or to select to show data on only monitor 1 or monitor 2.
What I need is for each monitor to be independent of the other so I can have say a web site with data on monitor 2 and a spreadsheet on monitor 1 that I want to transcribe the data to. I had this set-up years ago when using Windows 7 and it worked great. I was able to have a U.S Cenus listing on monitor 2 that I would then type the information into my genealogy program on monitor 1.
So far, in Windows 10, I have only been able to share in different ways the SAME program on both screens.
See if this helps and can you post a screen shot of what you see in the Display settings screen.

When you press the Windows key + P should give you a list to change to and select Extend.

Yes understood that,as you can see the guy had 2 different screens up at the same time.. This was what i understood about what you were asking.
Yes, that is the screen I get when I do a Windows Key + P. I am using a DVI cable for the connection from the PC to the second monitor. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 405 video card, if that helps. None of the selections above gives me separate programs on each monitor
Are you video drives up to date?
Here is something that you can see if it helps.
Press Windows key + X and click on Device Manager
Click on View and Select Show Hidden Devices
In the list of devices, you should see the Display Adapters
Right click on the device and then select Uninstall
In the uninstall dialog, make sure you select the option to delete the driver package from the system
Click on Action and select Scan for Hardware changes
This will cause the device driver to be reinstalled. Once the driver is installed, Close all windows and restart the computer
