I've just got an HP ENVY 15-as002na laptop and get messages from McAffe Livesafe, installed on the machine, that it is at risk if I don't subscribe. However the Windows Defender assures me it's fully protected. On my previous (old) PC I had 360 Total Security that seemed to work OK.
Can you advise if the Windows Defender is sufficient or whether I need something else as well.

I would trust Avast or Avira over McAfee.

McAfee is included on most new PC's due to the manufacturers' possible contract with McAfee or some other reason. McAfee, in my opinion, is garbage. I would advise removing it and replacing it with either Avast or Avira :)

Windows Defender in Windows 8/8.1/ 10 is fine. On other versions of Windows it is next to useless.

I'd also add a malware detector. Ordinarily I'd say malwarebytes but v 3, the current version has issues. Version 2 will be supported until sometime in June so I'm not updating it.
If you can find a download for v 2, install that also.
