I've recently bought a new PC and monitor. It works fine with HDMI but with the Direct Port I only get a desktop without icons and the mouse and keyboard don't work. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Well since you your DP cable will not let you use the keyboard or mouse you can't check your refresh rate in Display.. Did your monitor have a menu? A bad DP cable will cause these issues..

When you check the refresh rate using the DP cable and the refresh rate is low, the DP cable may be bad. Who knows you may be able to change that with the DP cable.
 
The DP cable is new and I chose one which seems to be good quality. I guess I need to play around with the monitor settings to see.
