Hi, When the Dell goes into sleep mode and I press the power button to wake it up it shuts down instead of turning back on.

Hello mnisia,

Has this started happening since a recent Windows 10 update.

The chassis power button normally needs to be held down for four or five seconds before turning off the computer so it looks like the button options may have been changed somehow.

Using a notebook at the moment but the options are very similar, take a look at my two attachments below for how to check your power button settings.

It’s still doing the same thing. Very concerned hard booting all time. I checked bios usb active. Changed power button setttings. I thought I had replied earlier that indeed this began after a big windows update. Any help appreciated. Thank you

There are many variations of your XPS computer, can you take a look at the list here and when you find your model post the info in your next reply for us.

I think it’s the 8100 but I will have to double check when I get home in about 3 hrs

If the XPS 8100, there are no Windows 10 drivers for the computer so this could be a compatibility issue.

Question, why are you not using the keyboard to wake up the computer.

Its a 9100, when I use the keyboard to wake it up it shuts down

when I use the keyboard to wake it up it shuts down
Thats almost as if the settings have been reversed, most odd.

Have you got a system restore point that is before the problem first started.

See if following the steps at option 2 here helps with waking the computer using the keyboard,

I checked bios usb active
Forgot to ask, what do you mean by the above.

When I go into cmd prompt and enter powercfg -devicedisablewake "HID Keyboard Device" I' get "you are not authorized to make changes " I'm the owner and logged in as administrator. Whats up with that? Help
powercfg -devicequery wake_from_any (see img attached)

That time I went into task manager and opened new cmd checked runa as admin and a black script box appeared briefly and the disappeared when I entered the cmd powercfg -devicedisablewake "HID Keyboard Device I don't know if it did anything r not

I left it on last night, It went to sleep mode I pressed the key board and nothing happened I gently touched the power to wake it up and it shut down again..

You need to consider the possibility that you have a faulty power button, it really should not be so sensitive, this one of the reasons that OEM computer should not be allowed to cheap out by not having a separate reset button.

I checked bios usb active.

Forgot to ask, what do you mean by the above.
Can you also answer the above for us.

Have you checked for a system restore point that is before this first happened, if no, check and if you have one try using it, if the problem is the same after that you are looking at a flaky power button.

Thanks for the additional support Russ (y)

I've been trying to restore to previous date but it keeps failing. I've turned off av to be sure that's not interfering. what a pita

You keep missing answering what it is you mean by "I checked bios usb"
It may not be important but then again it may be.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

Spotted problems in Speccy but assistance works both ways, if you are not willing to or cannot answer any questions that are asked you only have to let us know, I will offer nothing further until we know what you mean by "I checked bios usb active."

When i was reading up on the problem it was suggested to check the BIOS to be sure that usb was active so i checked it and it was, no settings in the bios were changed when I closed out. I do appreciate your assistance. In the interum I have been shuting the pc down when I'm not using it. I usually leave the machine on all the time, I don't like turning it off and on.

This is a perfect example of why you should not follow the guidance of more than one forum or try things not suggested by someone trying to help you.

The BIOS has nothing to do with the chassis power button and being a Dell MB the BIOS will have very limited options, for example, were you aware that for years the USB ports on Dell MBs were disabled by default during boot and that on some of their boards the only USB that could be used when troubleshooting was USB port 1, came across so many people being caught out by it that I did an attachment, see below

It is in the Windows 10 Power Plan that you should configure the settings for what the keyboard does, see Dell info here

Nothing to do with the power issues but the following from your reply #15;

I've turned off av to be sure that's not interfering.
We can see in Speccy that apart from Windows Defender (which is all that you need in Windows 10) you also have MBAM and McAfee AV installed on your computer, not only will this cause all sorts of stability issues it can also leave you with no AV protection if they cancel each other out.

Are any of your AV products the paid for versions.

You have irregular voltage readings showing in Speccy, the high +12V reading could be responsible for the chassis power button behaving the way that it is. the other readings not highlighted in red could be anomalous but they too are also not what they should be.
