Hello,

I built a Windows PC two years ago and in the last month I started experiencing freezing/going to a black screen and restarting. I haven't made any new hardware changes and the only software updates made were basic windows updates or a manual GPU driver update.

I've tried a new hard drive (SSD) and I've tried testing each RAM stick with no luck. I believe testing a new hard drive rules out most software or driver issues that could have happened. Twice I've seen the BSOD with the error DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (usually it would just freeze or restart though with no blue screen).

I was wondering what hardware component outside of the hard drive or RAM could be causing this issue. I removed all peripherals and external devices besides the mouse and keyboard when testing for issues. My CPU is a Ryzen 5800x, my motherboard is an Asus X570 Prime Pro, and the Graphics card is an Nvidia 3080. I've also monitored the CPU and GPU temperatures when it crashed and did not see anything dangerous (I have 10 Fans + 3 in the GPU itself). I appreciate any assistance with the issue.

Can you access the system at all if so post a speccy link.

If not post as much as the system specs as possible including, make and models.

So other can assist let get a speccy report.

Do not forget to post the make and model of the PSU if this is a desktop.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

It is a desktop PC and does not post at the moment, it either freezes at "Preparing Automatic Repair" within the initial ASUS launch window or it goes directly to "Automatic Repair could not repair your PC" in a Windows type menu. Below are all the specs I am aware of for parts:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x
GPU: EVGA Nvidia RTX 3080
Motherboard: Asus X570-Pro Prime
PSU: ROG Strix 850w (White Edition)
RAM: 4x16 GB G. Skill TridentZ Royal 3600 MHz
SSD: Sabrent Rocket NVme 4.0 1 TB M.2
CPU Cooler: Lian Li Galahad AIO 360
Fans: 7x Lian Li Uni SL120

I attempted a full re-install of Windows (keeping personal files but deleting all programs), but it froze doing that several times before returning to it's normal state which was being able to post for 2-3 minutes before freezing.

Did this start after the GPU drivers were updated or something that has been happening?

where did you get the driver for the GPU from?

What we are mainly looking for are event leading up to.

Do you have the Operating System install media and what is the Operating system?

This had started about a month to a month and a half ago, I updated the GOU driver only a week ago. I got that driver directly from nvidia's site.

The operating system is Windows 10. I do have a Windows 11 install media available along with the new SSD I bought (Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 1 TB). I tried installing this Windows 11 on the new hard drive but it continued to freeze and black screen.

Where did this Windows 11 come form and going by what you have stated this did not happen until you attempted the install?

Could be a bad install media.

The issue arose with Windows 10 installed. I thought the hard drive had gone bad so I purchased a new one along with the Windows 11 install media USB drive from best buy but I couldn't even finish the install before it froze during setup.

Yes it stated that my PC didnt meet the requirements for Windows 11 so I enabled the TPM 2.0 setting and the secure boot and that fixed that issue. I now have the original hard drive in and have set the bios to the optimized default settings but it is still failing to boot.

I'm confident it's some sort of hardware failure since the issue has gotten increasingly worse over the past few weeks.

Could be hardware failure you may have knocked a wire and or something loose while changing the M.2 drive.

If these settings were not on when you changed the drive and installed Windows 11 and any other changes that were done need be undone for the previous OS to work.
