i'm trying to get my 3 tb hdd to run on my pc but i can't get any of my 4 open sata ports to see it, i've tried to fiddle about with the bios and the disk manager and i've tried changing the sata cable.
for some reason the only ports that register anything are 3 and 5, from what i've gathered in the last 2 days of messing around is that the m.2 shares 5 and 6 or 1 and 2 but i have no m.2 device installed and clearly port 5 is in use so i can't understand why ports 4 and 6 won't work, i even went to the lengths to remove my hard drive and try port 2, any advice would be great because i'm at the limit for my ability to self teach
 
in my bios all 6 ports are listed as enabled, the only ports that list a drive attached are ports 3 and 5, nothing new is showing up in my disk manager or the bios
i'm currently running windows 10 on my computer
and i built this computer in the summer of 2016, i'm just deciding to add more storage to it now with the 3tb hdd

Is the 3TB drive detected by the BIOS when connected to SATA port 3 or 5.

Running Windows 10 and the MB being UEFI BIOS the board should have no issues with recognising a 3TB HDD but you may need to check for updates for the BIOS, SATA and Intel Rapid Storage controller drivers, this though depends on whether or not the drive is properly detected and identified in the BIOS.
 
Back to basic remove all other HDs then plug in does it show in the bios then? Is the disk sata3 and what are your ports sata2?
 
okay so i've gone back inside my computer to try putting the new HD into port 3 which didn't work as well, so i decided to try the sata cable that was attached to my working HD and my bios could suddenly see the new HD even in the other ports i wasn't using. i have 3 sata cables that were from the modular power supply one is on my SSD and works but i guess the other two cables are busted. (asus- sata 6gb/2 -1522)

Thanks a bunch for that one suggestion that helped find the issue, i never considered that both new sata cables were dead

They are cheaply made in the millions by the same companies who stamp the various brand names on them, yours were probably two out of many more from the same batch that were bad.
