Specs: Processor- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-9400 CPU @ 2.90GHz 2.90 GHz
Ram- Vengeance lpx ddr4 2x8 gb (16gb) 2400 mhz
Mother board- Gigabyte b365m ds3h
bios version - f5
Graphics card- 1060 3gb
windows 10 pro

I decided to upgrade from my original 2x4 gb of ram to the new 2x8 gb of ram at first i just went on amazon and ordered the right ddr4 and gb amount but when i got it and installed everything worked fine but the amount of ram task manager displayed was 8 so i assumed a stick was bad and traded them in for a replacement. I got the new set installed them but same problem occurred, i realized i was a fool and got a 3200 mhz set when my computer is only set to go up to 2666 mhz so i assumed that was the whole of the issue but i then searched up ram specifically compatible with my motherboard and arrived at the set i currently have, but alas same issue of my computer only reading 8 gb available. in the bios my computer registers the sticks fine but it says that they are each only 4gb worth of ram. i have gone into msconfig and made sure the limiter is off, i made sure the mhz in bios was correct as well as the volts, ive tried to rearrange the sticks multiple times but my computer will only start up if they are in the 2 and 4 slot infinitely cycling on and off even when i install the old ram as well but when i ran a ram corruption program everything was reported fine. Is there a setting or change in bios i need to make to fix the issue of the locked amount of ram and as well as to be able to install my ram in the 1 and 3 slots? ty for any advise or insight im lost at this point and have just been going down a endless youtube fix videos hole.

Couple things you could do:
  • Get 2 sticks of compatible RAM that are larger
  • Go through the BIOS inch by inch and research what each thing does
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know :)
ty i dont want to return these and get a bigger more expensive set just to end up with the same issue of it only reading the sticks as having 4 gb and how dangerous is it to change my bios around without knowing intimate knowledge of what im doing?

i fixed the issue but am super confused on why it worked, so i go into my bios and click on set to optimized default settings go back and nothing appeared to have changed or have any new values so i just hit save and exit go into my task manager and bam everything is working great and i have my full 16 gb of ram. so i guess there was a random unknown setting in bios that needed to by changed that i dint know about. Thanks for the help and for haveing this great site to get info, much appreciated!!
