So, I have been going at this for about a year now.
I got a pc from 2004 for free by a friend.
It is an old lifetec on windows xp but i didn't mind at first because i wanted to make a server from it. I just wanted to upgrade it to windows 10 (or any newer version than xp) to make it more compatible.
I have tried for a year to boot it from a usb. No success
It is a phoenix award v6.00 bios on a msi ms-7048 motherboard
I have even installed plop boot manager because it doesn't show the boot order option from the bios but plot freezes or shows a black screen whith a white blinking line when i try to lauch from usb.
I also tried multiple softwares to create the key, like rufus. And other os, like mineos. The usb lauches from other computers, not this one.

I need help
Any informations or idea could be helpful.

It is a verbatim 2.0 usb stick.

I have also tried with other usb but i don't remember the specs.
No I haven't tried with linux but the usb doesn't show up in the bios anyway so it won't really matter.

the usb doesn't show up in the bios

Is there an option in the BIOS to boot from an external hard drive, if yes, make that the first boot device, save the new settings, exit the BIOS, insert your USB thumbdrive, restart the computer to see if it boots from your USB device.

Sidenote, make sure that you have a known good CMOS battery in the MB else no new BIOS settings will get saved.

Being that the OP revisited the forum but chose not to acknowledge my reply this thread will be closed.

Sorry for not answering for a while. I usually never go on forums.
1) The bios settings get saved so the battery is good.
2) For plop, same problem as with windows it just freezes.
3) I have tried plugging before and after lauching, to no avail.

Here are my options in the bios:

How did you make the usb?
Did you use the Windows Media Creation Tool?
Do you have another computer with a cd?
You could download the iso from Windows and burn to dvd
Do you know if you can get drivers for such an old computer to work with 10.

You could also try the option to connect the computer to the internet.
go to windows and choose upgrade this computer.
I don't know if you can upgrade via that method from xp
Trail & error.

I made it with rufus.
You can't directly upgrade from xp to windows 10.
I have a cd with ubuntu server I created some time ago but plop says this :

I am currently trying to create another one with cd burner xp.
And for some reason the mails don't show up in my mailbox

With the newer dvd it shows the windows 10 logo for 1 second and then black screen and then restart

So, it kinda works with discs now, I just need to buy a few more because I used the last one to install freenas, which doesn't work. But now it boots on dvds, so good enough I guess.
And for the usb I tried everything even with windows media creation tool the pc just refuses to detect usbs as bootable.

I don't think I need more help. I was able to create a boot dvd, so good enough.
