When trying to log in to the user profile I get the message "The User Profile Service failed to logon. User Profile cannot be loaded"
I logged on to another profile that has administrator status as I thought I'd try just changing the password but was worried by the statement that "You are resetting the password for C. If you do this, C will lose all personal certificates and stored passwords for Websites or network resources"
The Dell Studio PC with Vista OS is 8 - 9 years old. I've been using the same password throughout. There are 5 other users, all log in OK.
I've no idea what the significance is of 'loosing a personal certificate'; the password thing will be irritating but not critical but I would certainly not want to loose all the bookmarks I have on that profile with Firefox.
As an administrator is there any way I can access the profile without a password?
If I change the password might I still be denied access? If not will anything other than certificates and passwords be affected?

Hi, I followed your instructions and was then able to access the user profile but it was like a brand new profile without any data there.
I'm actually not too worried about that as I had previously copied a fair amount of the settings to a new profile (following PCHF instructions) and now realise I can access everything there from another user account. I'll just abandon that account.
But much more worrying is that the PC now won't connect to my Wi-Fi. Changing the SID key seems to have turned off Wi-Fi connectivity. If I try to connect manually I get mssg "Windows cannot find any networks"
I feel fairly sure that I followed your instructions accurately.
Can I reinstate the previous status from the backup (& if so, how?) and then just abandon that profile?

Download this batch file with another device and run it as admin on the machine -- then reboot.

Am reading posts on my phone. Will have to wait to use another device but will then try the suggestions.
BTW I can't print anything either - from any profile - I can get a print preview but the print window doesn't appear.
I'll revert once I've been able to try the above.

You can download it with your phone, and transfer it that way.

Try following the guide here and see if it restores connectivity :)

I tried this but when I typed in "netsh int ip reset reset.log I got
Reseting Echo Request, failed.
Access is denied
I thought I might try to go back to where I was last week as I could still access everything I want and just use anther profile but the registry will not restore! I musty have buggered it up somehow as if I try to restore via Regedit > Import it goes through the motions then comes up with a window saying "Cannot import C:\........\Desktop\Registry Backup.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.
If I just double click it says the same thing.
I'm going to try Malnutrition's suggestion but I have a feeling that I messed up when changing the SID key.
This is a very well used and tired PC. Guess I should probably go and get a new one......

I've tried downloading that file to my phone. When I click on it I get the message "starting download" and nothing else. If it has downloaded I've no idea where it is.
Since then I've borrowed a laptop and tried again. When I click on that folder a page opens in a new tab for a fraction of a second then disappears so I've been unable to open it. Do you have a link to the download I can try.
Once I have it on the laptop, how do I "run it as admin on the machine"? I can see how I connect my phone to the PC via a USB cable but how do I connect the laptop as both machines have USB female ports.

I did that, clicked on the internet.bat file which ran through with the PC doing a restart but I still get the same "Server not found" etc and "Windows cannot find any networks"

On the sick machine, run this tool.

Net Adapter Repair!

Save the application to your desktop, right click and run as administrator.

Note: Your ethernet cable must be plugged in during this process!!

Hi Malnutrition,
I did as far as I could with #14 above but I think it was unable to complete as not connected to the internet despite linking via ethernet cable.
I carried out "Advances Repair" but after it rebooted it still could not find any networks.
I reopened NetAdaptor, checked all boxes and ran all selected. The 'progress' bar moved rapidly to about half way and stopped a got the message "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The RPC server is unavailable."
I have opened Network and Sharing Centre and selected Manage Network Connections but there was nothing showing in that window other than the headings. I had intended going to Local Area Connection and selecting Internet Protocol Version 4 in properties but never got that far.

I really think I must have made a mistake while changing the SID Key that has messed up that connection whether accessed via WiFi or Ethernet.

I think I'll leave it. I've replaced it with a laptop and will just have to upgrade myself to work with Window 10! The Dell Studio has done 9 years hard work so it doesn't owe me anything.

But thanks for all your help and I'm sure I'll be back before too long asking Windows 10 queries.

K
