General Causes

Blue Screens / BSOD's / Stop Errors can be caused by a number of problems both hardware and software. Looking back at what may have recently been changed around the time your problems started may hold the key to a solution.

The most common software causes of blue screen are often 3rd party device drivers, which have either been installed for the incorrect version of Windows, or have not been signed by Microsoft. Unsigned device drivers are drivers which are not taken part in the "Windows Logo Program", which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft for "quality purposes". Faulty/untested device drivers can cause all kinds of stability problems, so a member may either ask you to update, or enable "Driver Verifier", if there are any suspicious drivers in the logs.

Stop errors caused by hardware are often down to misconfiguration or compatibility problems. You may be asked for further information about your system if hardware is a potential cause. The most common components in a system to cause problems is memory. Pushing hardware beyond it's capabilities is another, such as overclocking, overheating, or insufficient power. It's not uncommon for hardware to be added to a PC without taking into consideration the additional power requirements that may be needed, especially when it comes to things like graphics cards.
