Anyone use a virtual private network (VPN) on their computer? Free or paid software? Pros/Cons? I would like it for overall privacy/security & specifically for downloading torrents (shhh :) ).

Have used both paid and free VPN's, Opera has a free vpn built in which you can try, not too bad. Firefox has a VPN extension that has worked well for me called setupVPN. Private internet Access, a paid for service was pretty good although I had an issue for a while getting credit card payments stopped when I decided to terminate it.

I would do some research before believing it makes you invisible. I believe a number of countries with VPN's providers that are indeed required to hold records of your traffic and hand them over when required. And that's apart from the dangers of P2P software which can share more than you'll ever know, and the questionable software that is shared which may come with it's own surprises.
