Hi! Does anybody know if it is possible to transfer a hard drive from an old Windows XP laptop into a modern laptop? Are there any special things that I would need to do that? Would I even be able to run the operating system on a modern laptop? I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you!

Probably will not work the drive may not fit if full size and all modern HDD are SATA where the older drive are PATA (IDE)

You will have to wipe and preform a fresh install of the OS that is was on the Laptop and install the drivers starting with the chipset first and then the rest of the drivers in the proper order.

Thanks for the reply! I'm much more familiar with modern Windows systems, and I haven't used XP in years, which is why I was asking. Anyway, I did buy an adapter specifically for IDE drives. It did say that it was compatible with Windows XP, Windows 10, and everything in between, so I imagine it should work. Do you think I'd be able to access the files on the drive on my modern PC with the adapter? All I need to do is transfer some files off of it, but the original laptop that it was in does not work. I did test it with another modern Windows 10 SATA drive, and it let me browse the files just fine.

Ok now I see what you are wanting to do.

Was reading this a you were wanting to replace the primary drive with the XP one.

You purchased and adapter that will connect the drive via USB if I am understand this correctly?

The yes it should work just like ant other USB drive.

Thanks for letting me know! I still have to receive the adapter to try it, so I'm hoping it will work. I was originally thinking of swapping it with a modern drive to see if I could just boot to it on my laptop since that's what I do with other, modern drives. At the time I made the original post, I didn't know the older drives were IDE and I hadn't thought of getting an adapter yet.
