Further investigation on YT there are so many suggested fixes for this issue including editing the registry etc. Not sure what applies in my case
have I tried a few basic fixes time date/time settings etc none worked checked for Win 7 updates but I feel that I may need a Microsoft patch file to make it load and useable.

Hi Rusty Thanks for your replies. I have sorted the issue after a few hours of research on YT and used the Microsoft easy fix tool to sort the registry though it was hard to find a download link as no longer supported. There is an update file also to download to fix this issue but when I went to manually install it it already existed so the easy fix was the fix and Media creation tool finally loaded. Took a while to download the Win 10 files but I have checked the flash drive and its all on there. Next job will be to physically install and connect the second ssd drive, disconnect my Win 7 drive, select boot from flash drive in boot menu and install win 10 on the SSD. Hopefully I can then reconnect the Win 7 drive and create a dual boot system. I believe that sounds about right but please let me know if you think differently. Cheers and thanks for your help.

then reconnect Win 7 drive and create a dual boot system.
Wish it was that easy.

Windows 7 was originally drive C once you put the SDD and install windows 10 on to it will become C.

Then when you attach the Windows 7 drive it will have a new drive letter and everything that is there has a reference to the C drive and not the drive letter that is associated to it.

There are things in the registry and ini files that will reference certain programs and files that may not be present and or incorrect version.

Other than that, sounds like a plan for Windows 10.

Thanks guys how does the computer recognise which drive is the default drive? I will continue to use Win 7 mainly as its performing and doing all of the limited and simple tasks. The new ssd win 10 drive is more of an experiment and for me to try and get up to speed with the ins and outs of dual boot and windows 10 and generally learn a few things. I may just use it for web browsing and Google apps and transfer some of my docs and photographs over purely as back up for the time being. Ill take a look at Easy BCD Pete I guess the free download is the way to go for which I just need to register though there does seem a number of ways to achieve a dual boot system on YT. Thanks again.

Just another query . Would it pay or is it correct to to activate and allocate the new and fresh drive in Win7 before I install the wIN 10 Operating system so that it is a useable drive in windows 7?

You are making this more complicated than need be.

No need

You can do it without easybcd

Hi and thanks for the replies. Pete yes I could see in YT tutorials a number of ways to do a dual boot on two separate drives. I believe I understand Rustys comments regarding files that are associated with the original drive but I believe that would only apply if I transfered everything across from the Win 7 drive.
I intend to start again from scratch and just slowly migrate personal files not programmes/. Download Chrome / anti virus software etc and update printer and device drivers etc within the Win 10 SSD drive. Eventually I will likely switch to using windows 10 when I feel confident all is well and there little on the old drive I need so could be used for storage though I doubt I will ever need it. I feel more confident doing it this way rather than just updating my old win 7 system and then possibly wondering why things aren't running as they should be. I know some have had issues with the update. One other query is that if I use the old licence key for Win 10 which should work will Win 7 license key then be redundant? Basically will the same license work on both operating systems? Cheers all.

Then I would suggest that you attach the Windows 7 drive via USB.

Take your time and ask questions confirm as needed.

Legally no the license is only good for one specific copy of windows.
