Win10Pro: Proper App White

Hey guys.

I'm trying to restrict apps to a predefined whitelist in an effort to protect mom from herself without a clunky AV bogging down performance in the background.

What I found about the above linked approach using gpedit is that it simply identifies applications by name, instead of by file path. This seems incredibly silly to me, since malware can very easily sneak in provided it's named after a legit app, say, Notepad.exe.

Is there a more secure way to do this? Preferably, I'd like to avoid commercial solutions.

Thanks!

There is no 100% foolproof way to guarantee safety if you are going to install/use software or access the internet. The link you referred to does actually only allow the whitelisted file to run from the path where it was entered.

Some things to consider keeping your system secure
  1. Install a quality commercial security suite. A quality security suite well configured will not bog down any pc that has a reasonable spec. This realtime protection could be enhanced with a second opinion run on demand only when required scanner. Never fall for the trick of running two full time realtime protection apps simultaneously.
  2. Practice safe browsing
  3. Create regular system images to a device that is removable from the PC
  4. You could install Web of trust, and something like unchecky
  5. Only use a safe browser, Chrome is safe UNTIL you install extensions and addins.
  6. Sorry, but don't let paranoia take over
