unexpected shut downs: kernel power event ID 41 task category (63)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Issue summary: I have sudden system shut down (as if I long pressed the power button) and then reboots, it’s logged in the event viewer as kernel power event ID 41 task category (63), mostly while gaming, rare in anything else.

System specs: here is speccy link: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/Ofx7AfNfWjx5HdKLDA1zYNu

General observations:

  • Most of the times I feel that there are certain triggers (in game) for example:
  • NFS the Run: at a certain point in race it almost always crash.
  • Superhot VR: as soon I grab the gun it crashes, if I stay moving my hands nothing happens.
  • League of legends: Summoner rift & ARAM modes are totally fine; Arena almost always crashes.
  • Random timings:
  • Half life alex VR: game mostly playable, but can randomly have crashes.
  • Epic roller coaster VR: same as above.
  • Valorant: same as above.
  • Arizona sunshine: same as above.
  • How heavy is the game is not relevant, I played *** of war, resident evil 4 remake, horizon zero dawn, and never crashes, even for long hours, yet it happens with relatively less heavier games.
  • Other heavy applications doesn’t crash: rendering videos, converting videos (with and without CUDA), with an exception of a video upscaling software, as soon as I hit start it crashes

Solutions tried to fix the issue:

  • Power options:
  • Turn off hard desk after: Never
  • Sleep after : 0
  • Update all drivers: done, other than windows I installed a utility (Driver Booster) and made sure to update all drivers.
  • Turn off fast start up: done
  • RAM testing: windows utility didn’t work I used memtest pro with (pass) result and no errors.
  • Update BIOS: done
  • CPU test Intel: pass
  • Disable Auto-restart in the Advanced System settings: even with that ticked, it still restarts
  • I removed that 8 gb ram which has different Mhz rate, and I kept the 2 identical 4 gb in slot A,B respectively, yet problem persist.

Notes:

  • im not sure if its worth noting, but after the solutions I tried, superhot VR stopped crashing at gun grabbing yet it still crashes ALL the Time after a 15 min (average) play time
  • Some people has the problem gone with SSD replacement, I replaced my SSD for a bigger capacity, yet I still face it.
  • I tried a fresh windows installation, installed the antivirus and steam, still it crashes.
  • I tried many solutions to have a memory dump, but its not written, I used whocrashed, and followed up with the articles, but I couldn’t make windows write a memory dump.
i appreciate your support, i need a solution, i want to know if its a hardware issue, compatibility issue, bottlenecks, im planning to upgrade component, but from reading around the web, its rare that i found someone who easily solved the same issue, and it happens even at higher end pcs,

thank you in advance, and please let me know if any more data is needed.

Great info there but sadly it is lacking the information regrading the most important PC hardware component.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the PSU + how old the supply is.

We can see a few things there in Speccy but we need to the PSU info first.

Update all drivers: done, other than windows I installed a utility (Driver Booster) and made sure to update all drivers.

Complete snake oil and one of the worst things that you can use when having computer issues.

I may not be around again today so you may need to wait on another helper to chime in.

thank you so much!

regarding the driver booster thing, noted! i did a fresh installation with windows update utility only, so i think we're fine now XD.

as for the PSU, its Delta Electronics GPS-750ab-a 750watt, how old I'm not sure, I bought the PC case as is in 2018, i don't know how long the previous owner has used it. i added an image of the label as an attachment.

When you ran the HWMonitor were you gaming at the time? If not, I'd like to see the HWMonitor output during an activity that triggers the event.
I think you would benefit from replacing the PSU. The only info I can seem to find is from 2015-2018. Ancient in the PC universe.
I found one post that claimed this PSU was a Tier 5, again the post was from 2015. Assuming Tier 5 would correspond to Tier E = Avoid.

Pick from here:

i dont think i was gaming, i just extracted the data from there, then i noticed in this forum you prefer speccy, i think the PC was idle, maybe browsers were open, i will try to extract HWmonitor report while gaming before it crashes,

but the general consensus seems that PSU is the culprit? i understand it might be a tier 5, what baffles me how it runs Horizon zero dawn, *** of war for long hours, yet it crashes at a game like Surperhot VR in 15 minutes which is graphically just low polygons XD

any how, ill post the HWMonitor results today, much appreciated!

additional information, im not sure if it is related, kaspersky has shown that i have a failing HDD for a while, i removed every thing i need from it but i havent had the chance to remove it, im not that hardware savvy, and i didnt think that it might affect anything, just wanted to add this bit

The PSU was first released in 2014, has no minimum efficiency rating, a twelve month warranty and should never have been used near an add on GPU.

This only if you intend keeping the present hardware, allowing for the additional storage devices and the present GPU requiring a minimum of a 600W PSU I suggest that you get yourself a 750W Bronze efficiency rated PSU from a quality brand such as EVGA or Seasonic, Bronze efficiency rated is only suggested because the GPU is old and if it were new Gold efficiency rated would have been advised.

The failing Seagate ( F: ) drive is one of the other issues to which I rereferred

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

Thank you guys for your input, I will surely get a new PSU given the above info, I don't want to drag this and bother you anymore, but it really intrigues me how such a bad PSU can handle heavy gaming sessions and rendering videos with heavy FX and crashes on way lighter one? Is there an explanation for this?

You are not bothering anyone, as long as we are kept up to date we always see threads through.

In answer to your question, computers can be fickle, fine one day then broke the next, one thing for sure here though is the present PSU is an accident waiting to happen and it is not a case of if but when it goes pop.

Fwiw: the PSU was okay back in the day because the hardware was not so high end and demanding, the multi rail thing was a fad that I`m pleased to say died a death because it served no purpose other than to confuse people.

You are welcome and good luck (y)

Just a word on any replacement PSU don`t skimp on the brand, stick with a known good brand ( as in my reply #9 ) avoid the likes of Cooler Master and Thermaltake and last but not least, consider any new PSU as an investment that will prolong the life of this computer, if you go cheap you go broke.

Sure! Notes taken, honestly I'm thinking of upgrading all components, but I need this pc to last me a bit until I do so, and I will take that into consideration when buying the PSU.

Again, your efforts are truly appreciated!
