Solved RAM Problems

Hey guys, I've recently ran into a problem while building a PC for my sister-in-law.

We bought 64GB of ram for her pc, as she does a lot of video rendering for work.

When trying to put the ram into their respective spots, the motherboard flashes CPU and MB lights, and won't boot.

The PC only boots with either one stick of RAM in either the 3 or 4 slot, or two sticks of ram in both the 3/4 slot, so the ram isn't paired the way it's supposed to be, and she only has half of the RAM she needs for her PC.

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions, or possible fixes that we could try.

COMPONENTS INVOLVED:

MB: MPG Z490 Gaming Edge Wi-Fi

CPU: Intel 10th Gen Core i7-10700

RAM: Vengeance RGB Pro 2x16 DDR4 3200MHz (4 sticks in total, so 64GB)

TIA, Ryan

What’s the maximum RAM the pc will take? I suspect the maximum is 32 as the pc is booting with just two sticks.
Does the PC boot with 3 sticks? If yes then one stick is faulty; if not then the PC has a max RAM of 32.
Is the RAM the same make & type?

I'm not big on the actual mobo limitations, but yours says the RAM supported is 3200(OC).
which I know stands for Over Clocked.
whereas yours is simply 3200 normally.
so I'm not sure if it's 100% supported - I guess it is as it works with two sticks.

Do you have a link to the exact same RAM that you have so we can check the specs etc.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of both the GPU and the PSU.

Hey guys, sorry for late reply, I've been at work.

I'm not sure the max amount of RAM that the system is supposed to take, sorry.

GPU: MSI GEFORCE RTX 2070 GAMING GP GRAPHICS CARD
MB: MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WI-FI MOTHERBOARD
PSU: ANTEC EARTHWATTS 750W GAMING PSU 80+ GOLD SEMI MODULAR
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz CL16 DDR4 Gaming Memory (https://www.centrecom.com.au/corsair-vengeance-rgb-pro-32gb-2x16gb-3200mhz-cl16-ddr4-gaming-memory)

According to the MSI website it is 128GB.
There’s a BIOS update from Oct available.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as I have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

Hopefully it is not too late but whatever you do, do not update the BIOS at this time, none of the RAM working in either of the two channel A slots suggests that there is a problem with the MB but should you update the BIOS without being advised to by the merchant that sold you the MB they may well refuse to RMA the board as they have no way of knowing if a bad BIOS update caused the damage.

Post back and let us know where you are up to as in whether or not you have updated the BIOS.

Sorry for the slow replies, I work 6 days a week.

I got into contact with the store I bought the MB from, and they asked me to bring it in to check it out. It turns out the motherboard was faulty.
It was a problem with the pins, they weren't bent, but apparently there was a few missing from factory.

They exchanged the MB on the spot and installed it in the computer for free. All works perfect now with 64GB of RAM.
Updated BIOS this morning.

Thanks for all the help

No problem, normal forum procedure to ask for an update when a thread goes quiet for three or more days.

Bit of an unusual one that as never heard of the issue happening before and most surprised that the board would work at all tbh.

Best guess is that the missing pins were for the CPUs memory controller, still surprised that the board worked at all though

Glad you are all sorted in any event and thanks for letting us know and for sharing the solution (y)
