PSU or Mother board or DDR3 issues?

Hello guys!

PC Specs:
CPU : i5-4670K
GPU : Sapphire Vapor-X R9 270X (Waiting on my new RX 580 to arrive)
MB : Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H
RAM : DDR3 HyperX Black kit of 2x4gb (KHX16C9B1BK2/8X)
PSU : Orion 585w

Recently, I looked into the performance of my machine due to slowdown problems. My machine was obviously out of date so I decided to add RAM and change my video card, as my CPU is still good.

I have read that models and brands of RAM do not mix. I then decided to check on Ebay if there was not someone selling the same model of DDR3 that I currently have. There are four spaces reserved on the motherboard for the modules. I found someone selling two 4GB sticks of the same model that I already had. So I bought them.

When I received the bars, I checked that it was indeed the same model and then I installed them. The computer turns on and off automatically after one to two seconds before restarting in loop without reaching the bios.

I then tested each bar individually in each of the available slots and everything works perfectly. When I use 3 bars simultaneously, it works, but I experienced unexpected shutdowns and my mouse stopped working. I also had a bsod (atikmdag.sys) when I had three bars.

I'm trying to understand .. The four bars have the same model number (KHX16C9B1BK2/8X). Based on https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator my machine draws around 500w, but my PSU is 585w. It is my MB?

Please help!

I am totally amazed that you have been able to run a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 270X while using the Orion PSU :unsure:

The PSU is labelled as 585W when in fact that even when out of the box new it could only produce 180W which is appalling and you are real lucky that it has not popped and taken out all of your hardware with it.

You can confirm the true wattage for yourself by using the PSU specs at Amazon and below is how you do it;

+12V@15A, The 12V is what the mains electricity gets reduced to by a PSU and the 15A is the amount of amps that the Orion PSU can produce on the +12V rail, to get the true wattage of a PSU you multiply the 12V by the 15A on the +12V rail and you get 180W, being so bad I thought that the specs must be a typo so I went and double checked elsewhere and what I found confirmed that the Amazon specs were correct, Newegg confirm the specs here

I strongly suggest that before you do anything else you upgrade the PSU to a minimum of a 500W Bronze efficiency rated PSU from a proven brand such as Corsair, EVGA or Seasonic, check the PSU links in my sig for brands to trust and brands to avoid.

I must admit that it made me laugh a lot. I run this system since 2013. I suspected that this PSU was not ideal, but not to this point haha

So, that would really be the basis of this problem?

The PSU is awful and needs to go before you fit the new GPU for fear of frying it but one test that you can do now is remove the present GPU from the MB, insert all four sticks of RAM, connect your screen to the appropriated video port, power up the computer and see how it goes, removing the GPU will reduce the load on the PSU and make more power available for the MB and RAM etc.

Will check back tomorrow, good luck meanwhile.

I ordered a new EVGA PSU.

I'm going to unplug the gpu and do the suggested test.

I removed my GPU and I tested with the four sticks and the computer starts normally, BUT I can't get a display with the DVI or VGA socket on my motherboard. No matter what I tried, nothing worked.

I had all of a misery to make the GPU work again, but it reassures me to know that the problem seems only to come from the PSU.

That`s odd, you did physically remove the X R9 270X from the PCI-E slot on the MB didn`t you.

Are you using any sort of adaptor for your video connection cable.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the screen that you are using,

Yes I did physically removed it.

No adaptor used.

Has a HDMI port as does your MB, give that a try.

Not working with the HDMI cable, nor with a DVI or a VGA cable.

The motherboard debug code stops at b4 (USB hot plug) when I try to start it without the GPU. I have disconnected all the USB components. Without success.

Try removing the CMOS battery for ten minutes or so to restore the MBs default factory settings.

When you next reply can I ask that you do not quote the whole post as it means I must read it in case you have inserted any info in there, snippets are fine though as they do help with highlighting important info you need to put across

Ok so I removed the CMOS battery for ten minutes and then I plugged the HDMI cable into the HDMI slot of the MB.

it started twice for about half a second before shutting down and restarting. The third time, the startup followed the normal procedure, with the video acquisition, but before arriving at the BIOS it again shut down by restarting continuously in loop.

That is real strange behaviour and something that I cannot explain tbh :unsure:

Was it the new or the original RAM.

NB: Entirely up to you as it is your computer but if you can, try holding off using it with the GPU and present PSU.
