Hi all.

Looking for an understanding of just how big an issue I've caused myself.

Fitted an additional power button extension with LED. It came with a keyboard type button that I cut off and replaced with a flush panel mount illuminated NO momentary button.

The wiring diagram colours for the button matched the colours of the 4 wires in the extension cable, Power LED+, Power LED-, and the 2 wires in the Power SW connector.

I used a splitter on the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk Power SW, so both the extension and original case buttons would function and powered the extension button LED only.

What I missed however is that whilst the colours of the extension cable matched the wiring diagram for the replacement extension button the wires went to incorrect locations on the motherboard. I've no idea now of what has been connected to what, or where voltage has been sent to places it shouldn't have been.

I've removed all elements of the extension from the PC and reconnected the originals.

The PC will not now power on.

Thanks in advance to anyone with the knowledge to advise.

Hiya.
Yes, as above. All returned to standard. Original PC power button now doesn't work.

Remove the power button from the front panel header pins and short out the two pins for PWR SW with anything metalic like a flat head screwdriver.
If that doesn't work, you have damaged the motherboard.

Show us some pics of the work you did.

Cheers for that Bruce, it at least rules out a coincidental fault with the original power button. No start up when shorting the PWR SW pins.
No pics worth taking, PWR SW splitter removed and LED+/- wires to original case power button reconnected.
Any thoughts on damage to the motherboard, am I looking at a new one?

Before we assign the mobo to the rubbish pile, it would be worth one last stab.

Remove all components from the case and reassemble, on a piece of cardboard, the motherboard, power supply, processor, one stick of memory, and the monitor straight into the mobo if your processor has inbuilt graphics.
So, no boot drive, no DVD unit, no keyboard or mouse, no PCIe cards - at this stage we just want to see if the PC boots up and can get into BIOS.

Thanks for the assistance Mods, appreciated.
The PC is only a year old and purchased as a complete unit. It's been unstable and pretty much unusable for most of that time.
13th/14th gen Intel issue. 3rd AIO, 2nd CPU and still crashes.
I need to ensure I'm not invalidating the warranty as I'm currently using the warranty more than the PC.
The test process described is beyond what I'm comfortable attempting, I'll drop the supplier a mail and see what's what.

You probably have already voided the warranty with the work you did - not that they need know that! 👍
Are you still just in warranty, or just out? (assuming it was a 12month period)

Oh dear, that's concerning, I'm 1 year into a 3 (possibly 5, can't remember without checking) RTB warranty.

So I'm thinking the rig now has an extra hole on the case for that power button you installed, and the wiring for the PWR SW cabling has be 'played with' when you split in your extra switch?

Check your warranty, but if they see the level of user work, I reckon they aren't going to want to touch it.

Thanks Bruce.
No additional hole, or any modifications.
Correct regarding the PWR SW, LED+, LED-, all disconnected and now reconnected.
I'll see what I can find out regarding the warranty.
