A week ago, my pc stopped booting. Without much thinking and testing, I immediately concluded the PSU is dead since it was old and bad.

It wasn't. Bought a new PSU, a corsair 750w. Pc still won't boot with GPU powered up. Again without much thinking I concluded the
GPU is dead. This time I didn't take the wallet out right away and went to my bud and took his GPU to try it in my system.

PC still does not boot. Now my conclusion was it must be faulty PCI-E slot and i need a new MB, tried both in 2nd PCI slot, same thing.

So, before i bought a new MB, I also took my GPU to my buds and tried it in his system, the GPU is fine, his system boots with my GPU,
also, his PSU is weaker than mine and MB and CPU are older.

Today, the new MB arrived, Aorus elite v2 along with new CPU, R5 5600x and I thought this very puzzling situation is at an end.
It isn't. Once again the PC will not boot when the GPU is connected to PSU, it boots without being connected and I get a
message to connect the GPU to PSU.

GPU is 1070. The HDMI cable is connected directly from TV into GPU HDMI port. Hopefully I didn't miss out any details.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This has got me stumped.
Just to check you are using 8pin power to GPU.
I cannot find a pic of the power connector and assume it is molded to accept the power connecter only 1 way?
The card is plugged into the PCIEx16 slot Not PCIEx2.
Have you tried to boot without the hdmi cable plugged in?
Because it turns on without the graphics card plugged in we assume bios version is ok.

if it still will not boot without any monitor cables plugged in.
Disassemble and reassemble on a piece of cardboard.
Test - no cables plugged in - hdmi etc
it boots without being connected and I get a
message to connect the GPU to PSU.
Strange that you get a message with no power
unless it draws minimum power from the pcie slot.
Let's get some other advise.

Yup, I am using an 8 pin to GPU, it does go in only one way, the pins are U shaped and theres a hook on the connector.

The card is plugged into PCIE16 indeed.

I tried plucking everything out but one RAM stick in 2nd slot, the m.2, the SSD, also tried without HDMI cable.
Still does not power up.

I'll try taking out the board now.

Power supply is enough.
From the manual.
To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand high power consumption be used (500W or greater). If a power supply is used that does not provide the required power, the result can lead to an unstable or unbootable system.
I belive the 750W is way above what i need.

GPU tdp is 150W
CPU - 65W

Think those 2 are the most power hungry and its barely over 200W.

Also, i noticed after a failed attempt to power up the system with gpu connected to to PSU,
when i unplug the PCIE cable from it, i'll first have to turn off the PSU before it would power up again.

Dont know if this is of relevance, i'll just put it here just in case.

when i unplug the PCIE cable
do you mean the pcie power cable?
I know the GPU works on your friends computer. Do you have someone you can borrow a simple gpu card from.
From the specs on the card and the mb they should work together.
I still doubt if it is bios.
You cannot check a gigabyte bios version until you get power and video.
I am really stumped on this.
I will try someone else. @phillpower2

you can always update the bios to the latest version as it has Qflash. However, I cannot see the bios stopping boot
as bios should have nothing to do with power. It should still allow boot and no video.
Card having power and stopping boot sounds like a short.
Let's see if any of the others I hit up have an answer.
Make and model of ram.
Also remove all ram.
power to gpu
will it power up?

For clarity and to avoid any possible confusion, a computer has not booted until the user is in a fully working OS such as Windows.

With the above in mind it is possible that the MB is failing the power on self test ( POST ).

What is the exact model name or number of the 750W Corsair PSU and is it out of the box new.

Do you have the keyboard connected to one of the black USB 2.0 ports.

I concur with Peter regarding the replacement MB needing a BIOS update and likewise we need to know the RAM details.

Yes, i mean pcie power cable that connects from psu to gpu.

I can take my friends card, but on sunday earliest. Working saturdays...
I'll also take my gpu to him and test it again..

Removed all RAM , result is the same.
