Hey All,

Could really use some help/advice.

I built my PC about 3 years ago and unfortunately my motherboard died about 6 months ago. I sent it back to the retailer, as it was still under warranty, but they lost it when they sent it to the manufacture. It was a MSI Z390 model which obviously has now been discontinued, so I opted to upgrade (I wanted to jump from an i5 to i7 anyway). After rebuilding with new motherboard and CPU my machine powers up but won't post. There is no beep. No sound from the board at all.
When I turn the power on the debug lights llght up (white) one at a time starting with the CPU, DRAM, VGA and then to the BOOT light. The BOOT light remains on.

Current part list :
MSI Z490 Gaming Edge wifi
Intel 10th Gen i7 (KF)
4 sticks 8GB DDR4
Deepcool CPU radiator cooler
ASUS RTX 2060 GPU
Thermaltake 850W (fully modular) PSU

I've done everything I can think of and no luck.

Here is what I've tried...

I've tried connecting to the monitor with both DVI and HDMI each, but the screen remains blank with message no signal received.
I've tried both with two different monitors also (both which work with my laptop). So pretty confident the monitor isn't the problem.

I've recheck all my parts are compatible and they are. Checked all my cables, even going so far as to swap the GPU, CPU, SATA and 24pin cables out one by one with spare from my old PSU unit (Gigabit)

I've removed everything from my board except the CPU, CPU and motherboard power and check each stick of RAM in slot 2. I tried to boot without RAM installed as well.
I swapped out the SD for an old HD.

I've reset the CMOS.

I've had a computer repair technician out to take a look, who pretty much did the same things I did with the same result. He couldn't identify the issue either (thankfully he didn't charge me).

Could it be a software issue?

(I upgraded using a anti-static mat also)

Sorry I just saw your graphics card.
Do you know the Graphics card works - tested in another machine.
MSI do not list what power is required for MB.
Video card = 500W CPU = 125W so your 850 should be ok.
Remove from box put on cardboard on table. CPU GPU 1 stick ram test

BOOT light. The BOOT light remains on.

Onboard LEDs EZ Debug LED These LEDs indicate the debug status of the motherboard. CPU - indicates CPU is not detected or fail. DRAM - indicates DRAM is not detected or fail. VGA - indicates GPU is not detected or fail. BOOT - indicates the booting device is not detected or fail.

ok we assume it is good.
The odd part is the BOOT light. The BOOT light remains on.
I would expect to at least get BIOS. All I can say is remove it from case and put on a piece of cupboard.
CPU, GPU 1 Stick of ram. Power on.
Hate to ask BUT have you got the 8pin plugged into the graphics.

LOL yeap it was plugged in.

Update:
So I got through to the BIOS finally. (Apparently I have to use the cord that came with the monitor)

The only thing that stuck out was that the SATA Ports are showing as not present? Shouldn't I see my SD here?

Did you do a clean install of Windows 10 and install the drivers for the new MB and starting with the chipset drivers first, the IRST drivers second and the GPU drivers third.

IRST drivers = Intel Rapid Storage Technology or in layman's terms SATA/storage drivers.

The SSD was the one I used pre upgrade. Since it came out I’ve not done anything with it (i.e is, apps, files are still on there). I can’t repair or clean install anything because the drive isn’t detected

No wonder you are having problems, you need to clean install Windows and the system board drivers and the reason why you are having problems is because the wrong drivers for your new MB are trying to be installed, see my canned info below;

Also be aware that because you have replaced the MB under warranty you need to contact Microsoft and inform them, if you don`t you will get locked out of Windows updates and have a you are using an unlicensed OS message on your screen.

Once Windows has been clean installed you must then install first the chipset drivers, then the storage/SATA drivers and third the graphics drivers, the drivers can either come from a disk provided by the motherboard manufacturer etc or downloaded from the site and saved to a flash drive etc, this is a must and Windows should not be allowed to check for updates before it has been done as more often than not Windows installs the wrong drivers or in the incorrect order and this can cause all sorts of problems.

okay but how? I can't wipe the drive in the BIOS because the SSD doesn't come up? I can't use the windows installation CD to erase and re-install because the SSD isn't detected.

You cannot wipe the drive in the BIOS that gets done when you clean install Windows and the BIOS has its own SATA drivers that have the specific purpose of enabling one or more of the SATA ports to allow the end user to be able to install Windows when a MB is out of the box new.

What is the brand and model name or number of the SSD

What happens when you press F11 during the power on self test (POST).

Where in the BIOS are you looking for the SSD.

Have you changed the boot sequence in the BIOS so that your DVD drive is first in the boot order.

When you boot from the Windows DVD disk are you getting a message asking you where you want to install Windows.

From where did you get the Windows media that you are trying to use, is it a genuine Windows DVD from Microsoft or an ISO downloaded from Microsoft here

Samsung 860 evo (1TB)

Yes, I'm not having any difficulties running the windows installation disc.

Yes but no drives (read SSD) are listed

Yes it is genuine. It was purchased from a PC Parts retailer in Australia. (Instructions state I am allowed 5 installations, this would be number 3).

You missed answering the above questions, can you do so for us.

I checked the cables with spares that I had again and tried using the window installation disc to see if it could detect it but no joy.

The answers that you have given prove that your SATA ports are in fact working, if they were not your DVD drive would not spin up and attempt to load Windows.

This implicates the SSD itself.

Get back to us with the required answers, once we have them we will know what to suggest.

Under Storage where it lists the SATA ports

What happens when you press F11 during the power on self test (POST).
Window displays "select boot device". No devices are listed.

Note I disconnected my CD/DVD player. I don't know if it makes a difference but it is a portable one that gets connected up via USB not SATA.

Should have been mentioned in your OP as it not only means that you are not using the SATA ports which was what your info implied it also means that the BIOS is set to boot from a USB device.

Your answer again suggests that the SATA ports are detected but the SSD is not.

Window displays "select boot device". No devices are listed.

This means that the BIOS is not finding an OS to load.

Best thing that you can do is go to option two here and download yourself a free Windows 10 USB thumbdrive ISO and then try clean installing Windows to the SSD using that.
