Solved PC rebooting/crashing irregularly in games

Hi there,

I'm having a few crash issues on my PC and need a little help.
It happens inconsistently, and only in games, mostly the PC will power off, then straight back on again and a couple of times it will lock-up and I'll need to hold the power button down to restart.
I've checked the event viewer and all I can find is the alerts that it rebooted unexpectedly, nothing to shed any real light on the problem.
This is a self built PC, only a couple of weeks old and has been solid until just a few days ago when this started happening.
Specs are:
i7 10700k
MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi
16gb DDR4 @ 3600mhz via XMP
980ti
750w Corsair PSU
Windows 10 Pro 64bit

I've pretty much ruled out heat as an issue, in games I've never seen the CPU go above 70c, airflow seems decent in the case too.
I've updated to the most recent bios, I'm using the most up-to-date drivers available.
I even reset Windows again earlier which hasn't seemed to have fixed it.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful as I'm starting to pull my hair out here!

I did look for the minidump file but unfortunately, couldn't find it. It did seem to be enabled, but I have followed the instruction on the sticky post but there is no folder for it.

Before going into detail about what we can see in Speccy we need some additional info, there is also some information for you to read.

Doesn`t add up as the 980Ti is obsolete being that it was released six years ago.

750W sounds great but it depends more on the efficiency rating and the age of the PSU, if not Gold efficiency rated and still in warranty it should not be used anywhere near an add on GPU.

How old is the GPU.

What is the model name or number of the PSU.


So that you are aware that there is a difference between overheating, hardware failure and software crashing, see the below;

Software such as Windows can crash and when it does crash you get a BSOD and when enabled a crash dmp is generated, third party programs may on occasion close to the Windows desktop.

Hardware failure such as a weak power supply and/or overheating are not software related and when a computer freezes, restarts, suddenly turns off or the screen suddenly goes black or jumbled the behaviour should be described as the "computer shut down unexpectedly" etc and not as having crashed as the latter implies a software issue as opposed to an obvious hardware issue when described properly.

Having the correct info means that helpers will not be looking for a software issue when the problem is clearly hardware related.

I didn't explain this too well, my bad. The 980ti is my existing GPU from my old build. I've had it around 4 years myself and I think it was about a year old when I bought it. It is the Gigabyte Extreme Waterforce variant. My budget can't stretch to a new GPU right now (especially with the messed up prices) so I'm using this, it was fine in my previous system, without these issues.

750W sounds great but it depends more on the efficiency rating and the age of the PSU, if not Gold efficiency rated and still in warranty it should not be used anywhere near an add on GPU.

PSU is Corsair RM750x - 80 Plus gold certified.

Can`t rule out the GPU then but a solid PSU with a good warranty.

Two particular things of note in Speccy;

Power Profile
Active power scheme: High performance

Change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues and the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power.

RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1799MHz

Your RAM is being OCd way past what your CPU is comfortable with which is 2933MHz going off the specs here

Go into the BIOS and manually set the RAM speed to 2933MHz, restart and see if that along with changing the Windows Power Plan helps any.

Thanks for that. I have done as suggested above. I just enabled the XMP profile before and didn't think too much of it. I hadn't even checked what the max setting for the CPU was so that's a noob error right there.

I'll see how it goes over the next few days/week and report back if the problem persists.

XMP is fine but only as long as the RAM does not exceed the speed that the CPU is comfortable with.

Hello again. I know this thread is due to be marked as solved but I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you again. The PC has been stable, lockup and restart free since I changed the memory timings. So I am fairly confident that has solved the issue.
