Solved PC freezing in some games.

I don't seem to have any issues running at 1080p. If it's a software problem, I don't want to have to limit my gpu to resolve it, since if I upgrade the card in the future those issues may still be there.
So testing on a fresh windows 10 on a separate drive partition, games still freeze running max settings, 165hz, 1440p, but my pc doesn't need to be force restarted. Event viewer says the display driver stopped responding and successfully recovered. Does this mean it's a hardware problem or can the files in other drive partitions affect my current fresh install of windows? The only things, other than default programs, installed on the new partition is steam and escape simulator for testing.

I'd agree with @PeterOz; on a fresh install if the graphics driver is acting up it's likely the issue.
Since this is windows 10 Id still disable Windows Update and Run O&O software. ( You can enable windows update on your own terms.)
Although this is an outdated software, I'd still run Decrap my computer this could help, you would be surprised at the things loading with your machine that you are unaware of. Remove any type of preinstalled crapware, as this is a perfect time to do it.

in post #21, have you created a Storage Pool?
if so, get rid of that for testing purposes.
but, based on the evidence, I concur your card needs upgrading.
the freezing still happens after a clean install (although, onto a clean drive would have been preferred to just a new partition).
and the freezing stops when the the GPU settings are reduced.
what are the games minimum specs compared to the card?
and the whole temperature thing - GPU hotspot, CPU high - have you changed the thermal paste under the CPU heatsink, and perhaps think about better (or more) chassis fans and CPU cooler.
if so, get rid of that for testing purposes.

I don't think I'm using a storage pool. I'm running a 1080ti so it should be well above most games minimum requirements. One of the issues is that I've had some demanding games run with no issue while other seemingly easier to run games cause freezes. I'm also using an AIO cooler for my cpu.
as to a Storage Pool, you may not be using one, but the entry Microsoft Storage Space Device is not something I have seen before.

how long has the water cooler been installed?
when was the last time the paste was replaced?
agreed - that is a good card, and more than capable of exceeding min specs for most games.
it may be an indirect thing, like, DirectX, or Steam version.
or simply a particular game combined with that card - interlacing, or 3D shading, or number of pipelines - I'm just theorising here - I'm not a gamer so I'm just tackling this from a 'what if' point of view.

I do have a 2 tb drive but I guess I set it up as a storage pool when I first installed it and forgot. The cooler has been installed for about 3 years and the paste hasn't been replaced in that time. I've only noticed my issues started when I upgraded my pc 3 years ago as per post #1. It doesn't seem like my cpu temps are that high though. The only high temps were my motherboard's southbridge and the gpu hotspot. Do you want me to replace the cpu thermal paste?
replacing the thermal paste certainly can't hurt.
sounds like you'd benefit from better internal airflow as well.
do you have a physical 2TB SSD inside the PC?
I don't believe you can setup a storage pool on only one drive, so I'm thinking that entry in post #21 is a virtual drive and physically spans 2 or more disks.
as to your freezing issue, having the Storage Pool may not even be your issue, but when looking at weird arsed issues, getting your PC looking basic and removing anything abnormal is the first step in troubleshooting.

The thing about that is that I've tried underclocking my gpu to try to stabilize and it actually lowers the amount of freezes that occur, so it might be related to gpu overall power output.
Have you cleanly uninstalled the graphics card driver using DDU then installed a fresh version of the driver?
