Odd Router issues

I wonder if anyone was able to shed any light on the cause of this odd issue. I changed over my Plusnet Hub1, for a TP Link Archer AR600 V1 (Second hand off E-Bay), as the hub1 Wi-Fi was rather weak at both ends of the house.

It setup fine(I did initial setup off the internet with the router not connected to DSL), and set DNS servers to Google DNS, and set Wireless SSIDs to be the same as the PlusNet Hub1 ones, for ease of transfer.

It booted up fine, and connected to the internet fine with syncs as expected (55/10). Only issue was all devices on the 5Ghz band didn't reconnect, they recognised the network, but needed the password putting back in before they would work. Devices on 2.4Ghz were fine, as were ethernet connected devices.

A few hours later started to see some odd issues, with the Sky boxes. Netflix started to refuse to load from the SkyQ mini box, as did amazon prime, but Disney + and other apps were fine. The Netflix app on the Main Q box, was very sluggish, but again all other apps loaded fine. The Netflix app on my Main TV worked OK, as did the Netflix app on a Roku Box. I assumed it was the boxes so rebooted them, same issues, but Netflix would load eventually. Did a network check via the Netflix app, and on both sky boxes it couldn't find Netflix server1, but once it had loaded it did work, and connection speed was recorded as 48Mbps.

Today, the Netflix app totally failed on the Minibox, just got a spinning circle, and occasionally an error that the box could not connect to Netflix. Again server1 appeared to be the issue, as the other servers got a green tick. Fine on all other devices but the Sky main box, which was now doing the same, but did occasionally connect. I did a full network reset of both sky boxes, which brought the app on the main box back for a few mins, but nothing on the mini still.

Just to note, all sky downloads and other networking worked fine during this (On demand etc), and sky boxes were reporting Network connections fine.

During this my wireless printer also refused to connect to some devices, but not others!! I did notice that the Sky boxes and Router were transmitting on the same 5ghz channel (Ch36), so I changed this on the router to Ch 48, still the same issues.

I reverted back to the Hub1, restated all devices one at a time, and all appears fine again.

Setup for Sky is:- Main box connected via Ethernet to Router. Mini box uses the Sky 5Ghz mesh network to connect. Main TV uses Ethernet to connect to router. Both TV and Main Sky box connected with 3M Cat6 cable. (TV connected to Mini box is not smart)

My question is, can anyone fathom why the TP Link causes these issues. I'm stumped. All working now, but would prefer better Wi-Fi to some parts of the house but not at the expense of these other issues.

Thanks in advance

Edit... just of note, the IP addressing of both routers was in the same range of 192.168.1.x Only difference from hub1, was I set different DNS servers, but I did reset these back to using the routers gateway, but still didn't fix things.

Try and let the router obtain DNS server automatically.

Or, see what the best DNS server for your area is and try and set that, seems people using google dns are having issues as of late.

Thanks. I did reset DNS servers to use automatically. Still got the same issues. Back on the old hubq this gets its DNS from the isp. I did do a network reset of the sky boxes after changing DNS

Thanks. The hub1 router from Plusnet is the only one that appears to work correctly. Every time I try to replace as its wireless range isn't very good I get issues. I had an issue with ethernet to my TV dropping out when using a BTBhub 6, with everything else working fine. Now I have a non ISP router, I have issues with connections issues to netflix via the sky boxes, but no issue using separate apps on the TV or Roku. To be fair, both routers were second hand, but I am now concerned if I buy new and get the same issues, I will be out of pocket. Can anyone suggest a good quality router, with gigabit ethernet ports, and decent wireless range on 2.4 and 5ghz wireless. My network isnt too complex.
1 Smart TV connected by Ethernet
Skyq Main box connected by ethernet
1 Windows 10 desktop connected by ethernet/homeplug
All the above connected with 3M CAT6 cable.

4 Android phones on wireless.
2 android tablets on wireless
1 wireless printer
3 Windows laptops on wireless.
skyq mini box on wireless.
1 roku express box wireless.

Don't want to pay a huge amount of money, <£100, unless anyone can provide any answer to the present issue.

Yeah, my thoughts too. I have tried different Ethernet ports on the tplink for the sky box, no changes. I just find it off that other Ethernet connected devices work fine. I'm resigned to keeping the Hub1 on again , as apart from wireless range it's worked flawlessly

Does the Wi-Fi show 1 entry for the SSID or are the bands separate?
Sky Q boxes will only connect to the 2.4Ghz band unless using Sky broadband, however Ethernet shouldn’t be affected.
Did you reset the router back to factory defaults?
Have you checked for any updates to the router?
Who supplies your broadband? If Plusnet then is their hub now in modem mode to be able to use the router?

Hi.
On the tplink, the bands are split. The qmain is connected via ethernet, the qmain via the sky 5ghz mesh that the q boxes create. When I got the tplink, I reset back to factory defaults, and there was a firmware update I applied
Plusnet supply my broadband. FTTC, with a 55/10 product. Both routers are DSL routers so no need for modem mode. Since I put the hub1 back on, everything has been fine again, but I do need better wireless than the hub1 provides. Hub1 also has split WiFi bands as well. I was using Google DNS with the tplink, but reverted back to ISP DNS with no resolution. Hub1 has no facility to set DNS servers manually.

Thanks.
Have you turned off Wi-Fi on the Hub1 & are using the router in Access mode?

Thanks for the replies. I didn't really want to go down the route of separate model and router which is why I went for the combined DSL modem router solutions. I will likely buy a brand new DSL router in new year.

I've gone back to using the isp supplied DSL router
That's what I mean
could be you need a modem router supplied by the isp
That's why you should try this until you can get a new one

Hub One as a modem only

Just upgrading to FTTC from ADSL and due to receive a Hub One. Currently I'm very happy with my TP-Link router ,particularly the wireless coverage, and it has dual WAN/LAN port,so is it possible to use the Hub One as a modem only if the wireless coverage is not as good?

Try telling this to SWMBO.😟. She doesn't like where it is at the min, never mind having 2 of them....... My main question was though why did the tplink not like the apps on the sky boxes? but was ok with the same apps on other devices..... all connected via ethernet. Thoroughly weird 🫤

I haven't to be honest..... I've got 2.4 turned off on both boxes, as main connected via ethernet. I'm not keen on wireless for streaming don't feel it's reliable enough.....
Appreciate everyone's time on this, but I think I'll stick with the hub1 until after Christmas as nd then get a brand new DSL router, not secondhand.....
