No sound after system reset

Hi everyone, Ive just done a factory reset on a desktop PC which was built up from parts by my Son. It was working perfectly but bursting with "gaming" stuff which I dont want.

I tried it before the reset and all was good, including my own speakers and headset, now neither my speakers or headset will work, the speaker icon has a red cross and "detecting problems" only tells me to plug in some speakers or a headset which are allready plugged in.

The drivers are up to date

In the sound panel it says no output devices found and when you click manage sound devices it says sound devices disabled, with no option to "enable" them.

When I troubleshoot sound devices it shows me 3 devices which are the same....NVIDIA Output-NVIDIA high output device.....clicking any of them runs a scan which tells me to plug in speakers or headset but my speakers are allready plugged in.

The PC is running windows 10 which Ive never used before so I'm a little lost.

Any help appreciated.

Hello

Try going into device manager,click on the the device marked with the red X. A window will pop up click un-install and restart your pc.. This should re- load the drivers back to your audio device..

Hi vger and thank you but the there is no device marked with a red X in device manager, the red X is only on the main screen icon for the speakers. In device manager I have 3 items under "sound.video and game controllers" which are......audio device on high deffinition audio bus (no drivers instaled for this device).....intel (R) display audio (the device is working properly).....NVIDIA high deffinition audio (the device is working properly)

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Thanks, aware that you said that you had done factory reset but noticed that this is a totally clean install of Windows and not just a remove all apps etc.

Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Computer type: Desktop
Installation Date: 26/12/2019

Since the reset have you installed the drivers for the Shuttle motherboard and starting with the chipset drivers first, Microsoft do not provide such specific drivers and they must be gotten from the board manufacturer, download from here

Thank you, I downloaded/instaled the drivers for chipset and audio, the vga drivers gave an error message (your PC does not meet minimum standards) Still no sound, I'm still getting the same error saying nothing is plugged in.

Can you post a new Speccy url for us so we can do a comparison, can you also check and let us know what is shown to be the default audio output device.

The only two audio devices list in Speccy are Nvidea and Intel with no mention of Realtek.

Go into Device Manager, expand the Sound, video and game controllers tab to see what is list there, if there is anything for Intel try updating it.

Going offline now as I have a 6am start in the morning, will hopefully be able to check back at some point after work.

There is nothing listed for Realtek under sound, video and game controllers........there are 3 items listed as follows.......the "intel display audio" has the most recent drivers......the "NVIDIA high deffinition audio" has the most recent drivers....... the "audio device on high deffinition audio bus" shows an error when you try to update its drivers, (windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while trying to instal them, IDT high definition audio codec, a device attached to the system is not functioning).

From specs that I am getting for the MB here the above is the boards integrated audio, the error message means that either the chips has failed or become disabled in the BIOS somehow.

If you cannot cannot find an enable/disable option for the audio chip in the BIOS the best option would be to see if restoring the MBs default factory settings helps any.

Found nothing in BIOS related to "audio".....nothing to enable.......... I restored it to factory settings the other day and thats what caused the problem but I'll do it again if you think there was some sort of glitch the first time ......Im assuming a factory reset will restore the MB's factory settings ?

Was as I thought and reason why I asked was so that I could clarify something for you, restoring the MBs default factory settings have nothing at all to do with Windows and by resetting Windows you in no way affected any settings in the BIOS, the BIOS settings are pre boot stage and once the BIOS has checked and found among other things a functional storage device and operating system such as Windows the BIOS gives over control to Windows and plays no further role.

The default factory settings are normally identified as "load defaults" "most stable" or "optimised settings"

The above suggests that you know how to access the BIOS so restart to access the BIOS, once in the BIOS look for and select if the info that I found is correct "Optimised Defaults" save, exit and then boot into Windows, if still no sound it suggests that the audio chip has expired.
