Hello , I have a Optiplex 9020 MT .. I got off ebay .. The Power supply was bad and after replacing it everything works fine except I have no sound out of the front or back output .. I tried 2 sets of headphones that work on my stereo .. Have looked into the settings as best as I could and everything seems ok ..the sound was working before I replaced the PSU ..
I'm replacing an optiplex 960 MT that's running fine .. just thought I wanted quad core and usb 3 but I'm not so sure now

Hello

Have you have checked the device manager for an error.. Given the age of this pc you may want to change out the cmos battery as well..
Hello , Thank You for the reply ... I'm an old retired auto/truck mechanic and not any kind of expert at this at all .. I did follow the directions in 3 you tube videos .. 1 of them had something to do with device Mgr.. Everything I looked at said it was running fine/"working" ... I have re-installed my 760 Optiplex and it's running fine ..Speakers work ... I have a test keyboard-mouse-monitor I will set up to try and figure this out ... Tomorrow

Hello , Thanks for the reply .. This is running windows 10 pro ..version 22H2 ... The service tag # is 9K16622 and the express service tag # is 20802331946.. This was the operating system it came with .. Was advertised as having a SSD but didn't ..so I installed a Crucial 500 gig one .. was running fine ..then I got the blue screen of Death ... I thought it might be the new hard drive so I switched back to the Original one ... worked fine for a while then the blue screen again .. I had noticed the Power supply making noise like a fan blade was hitting when the trouble was happening .. I could tap on the Power supply and make it stop the noise for a second .. I figured it was bad and replaced it .. Everything is working well now except no sound ...

I Installed the SSD I thought was bad into my optiplex 790 that was still running windows 7 .. It is running fine in there ... I don't know what's wrong with the 9020 MT (no sound) ..It would be nice to be able to use it ...

Thanks for reading this long message ..any suggestion's will be Appreciated .. Don

I suspect that the PSU issue is a pure coincidence and reason being is that the PSU has no direct bearing on the sound, if the audio chip itself had been damaged the whole board would have been.

Couple of questions for you;

Are you only using either the front or the rear audio ports, you can't use both as they cancel each other out.

Do you have a speaker icon on your taskbar, bottom right of the screen.

Are you aware that after clean installing Windows on a new drive that immediately afterwards and before Windows is allowed to check for updates you must install the system drivers first, this is particularly important with Dell computers because they are so picky that Dell provides a driver installation order list that you must follow, see How to Install Dell Drivers in the Correct Order

Hello ,Thank You for the Help , I have tried both the front and rear connection with 2 sets of headphones that work fine on my old Opti 790 .. No sound from either the front or back ... I do have the Speaker Icon on the bottom .. I tried to get the driver from Dell but they wanted me to download some program that would only download part of the Installer .. I don't think the new PSU has anything to do with it either ..

Does the speaker on the taskbar have an X on it and have you right clicked on the icon to go through the options there, the troubleshooting steps among them.

I tried to get the driver from Dell

Sorry but not what was asked, you 100% have to install Dell drivers how Dell tells you to or you will at some point get issues, this should have been done from the get go as Windows has a nasty habit of installing the wrong drivers.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply as we have to read the full post to make sure nothing gets missed,, thanks.

Thanks for the reply ..when I hit the reply button it automatically does the quote thing .. Am I missing something .. The speaker Icon has no X on it .. I have done several things to try to get the sound running ..cannot remember them all ..but I did look at the driver ..machine said it was working correctly ... I'd reinstall them but I do not know how .. Audio was working just before I replaced the PSU .. Thanks Again ..Don

You don`t press reply, you enter your reply in the dialogue input box and when you are done you press the Post reply tab.

Can you answer the above for us.

I did look at the driver ..machine said it was working correctly

No idea why this useless information appears because as you know the sound is not working else you would not be here, I have the same thing with the DVD drive on this notebook, it has never worked since I first installed Windows 10 yet Device Manager says that it is working properly

Hello OK sitting at the no sound computer .. I have tried to use the speaker Icon (right click) to fix the problem it says spatial sound (off) when I try to troubleshoot it the troubleshooter tries to direct me to Microsoft but it says I don't have internet connection .. I'm on the internet right now so I don't understand that ... I have a windows 10 CD with the code for it to work ..maybe I could run that and the drivers would work ... is it possible the person who sold this to me had installed a windows version that the sound only works for a while then you need to pay to have it turned on ?

hope this picture goes thru ..I had to "resize' it

Hello , Thank You for the Reply ..Yes ..the sound on my opti 760 works fine .. I'm using it now .. It did have windows 7 pro running on another hard drive ... When I figured the other problem (blue screen of death) on the 9020 opit wasn't the hard drive but the PSU I decide to try it ..Works good on this old computer ... I get where you're going ..why does the sound work with this hard drive and not the other ? It did work before I changed the PSU ..I cannot help but think I did something to mess it up ...
Thanks again for all your help ..Don

I tried to get the sound working for a couple of hours off and on today ..Got some blue screens and even black ones ..even when windows loaded it still doesn't have sound .. I have a battery for the cmos coming tomorrow .. I will let you know how that goes ..

I'm on the internet right now so I don't understand that

What about all the other options, have you tried them, if yes, what happened, if no, give them a try.

I have a windows 10 CD with the code for it to work ..maybe I could run that and the drivers would work .

Did you not understand the fact that you have to use drivers provided by Dell and installed in the exact order that they tell you to;

you 100% have to install Dell drivers how Dell tells you to or you will at some point get issues, this should have been done from the get go as Windows has a nasty habit of installing the wrong drivers.

Ding Ding Ding .. Thank You .. just installed a new battery ..System did some kind of repair and seems to be running now .. The old 3 volt battery had less than 2.5 volts .. I "researched" it seems it has something to do with the bios when the battery goes ..so I got it running again ..now if only the sound works .. I'm just happy it will boot up now .. I will let you know about the sound ...
