Solved Need help with a new system build

Not open for further replies.
Hello All
I'm hoping you guys can help me with fault diagnosing a system upgrade / custom build
Firstly I'll go over the specs then list the symptom / Issues.

Motherboard - Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 9 x299

CPU - Intel i9 7980XE - This CPU was purchased from Overclockers Uk and Has been De-lidded and pre tested to be stable at 4.6Ghz by overclockers from their range
of pre-binned Cpus.

Memory 2 x Corsair Dominator Platinum Chrome limited edition 32GB Kits Rated at 3200Mhz ( These kits worked 100% flawlessly in my previous x99 system with XMP enabled running at the rated 3200Mhz.

GPU - 2 x Invidia Titan Xp Star Wars Jedi Order Edidions In 2 way SLI (Again theses cards worked flawlessly in the x99 system.

PSU - EVGA Supernover 1600w Titanium (again no issues in previous system.

SSD - Samsung 960 pro 1TB (OS Drive - Windows 10 Professional Retail) no issues in x99 system

Previous system, as above except mobo was Asus Rampage V Edition 10 with Intel I7 6850k Overclocked to 4.3Ghz - 100% stable - no issues.

Now new runs fine at stock speeds - But as soon as I apply even a modes overclock of 4.0Ghz the system will boot, load windows, run low stress apps fine, but the instant I run anything that loads the CPU, the system will immediately power off / Hard reset, PSU will then power on and off and the on again and system will restart.
Remember this CPU has been pre- binned and pre tested stable at 4.6Ghz.

Secondary issues - System WILL NOT turn off or restart when windows is shutdown. When i select shutdown or restart from windows - windows will go through the shutdown process, Monitor / display is shot off, but system will not turn off or restart, and I am forced ot hit the reset button or turn PSU off and on at the switch on the PSU.

Now my suspicion is a defective motherboard since all the other components were 100% working on the x99 system, and as said the new CPU has been pre-tested.

But I have no way of testing or confirming whats at fault.
Obviously theses at not cheap components by far, and I don't have any spares to swap out to test what working and whats not.

what I don't want to do is to start sending parts back to retailers only to be told that they found nothing wrong with them and the want me to pay again for them to send them back to me (as has happend in the past)

So at this point I am not sure what to do or how to diagnose the fault.

So if any of you guys can offer any advice / suggestions it would be much apreciated.

Thanks

How has the pre-binned CPU been tested?
Has it been tested with the same variables your system has and with the same cirumstances?
(Personally, the ‘pre-binned’ tag would riase red flags with me!)
I guess only rerplacing that component first will prove that thoery. But as you state, there-in lies the rub.
It could also simply be a combination of components that aren’t playing nice together.

Since you say all the components were 100% working before in thge other system, and it sounds like this ‘new’ CPU is the difference, surely, initial efforts would have to start there.

Welcome to PCHF BenjaminSisko,

the instant I run anything that loads the CPU, the system will immediately power off / Hard reset, PSU will then power on and off and the on again and system will restart.
Remember this CPU has been pre- binned and pre tested stable at 4.6Ghz.

A common overheating symptom, couple of questions if I may;

Have you checked in the BIOS to see at what temperature the thermal trip that is intended to protect the CPU from frying is set at.

What CPU cooler are you using.

What thermal compound was used to remount the HS atop of the i9 7980XE.

Secondary issues - System WILL NOT turn off or restart when windows is shutdown.

Was Windows 10 a clean install for this CPU & MB.

Were the drivers for the MB installed and if done manually were the chipset drivers installed first.

Doing the following will not tax your hardware in any way;

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Speccy - http://speccy.piriform.com/results/pVrdunDvltxzGGm27y0fhzW

CPU was de-lidded and Tim replaced with liquid Metal and IHS re-sealed, CPU was then overclocked and tested to 4.6Ghz by 8-pack / Overclockers UK
CPU cooler is a Thermaltake Water 3 360mm tripple AIO with Arctic Silver 5 Tim Used.

Where in the bios do I find the thermal trip setting?

I have spoken to overclockers uk and they said that the Aorus Gaming 9 is not 1 of the motherboards they recomend for their pre-binned CPU's and could offer no
Garantees as to overclocking potential.

The shutdown / restart issue has been resolved - I believe it was due to processes related to the previous Asus Rampage motherboard installation.
I have disabled those processes for now - but will have to do a clean install to get rid of them along with Asus sonic studio 2 which has no uninstaller.

There is only one way to even attempt to re-use a storage device that has Windows and device drivers from a previous build on it and it is far from easy, this involves booting into Safe Mode then finding and carefully uninstalling the previous drivers and any profiles that may have been saved for such things as the ASUS AI Suite etc, you will not get the system to run stable without either doing this or clean installing, you will also get locked out of the Windows updates at some point because your product key will not match what is stored on the Microsoft database.

Things of note in Speccy that will require further investigation once the software side of things has been sorted but one thing that I suggest that you do asap;

Power Profile Active power scheme: High performance You need to change this to Balanced in the Windows Power Plan as High Performance is a form of OCing that is known to cause stability issues, this because it cannot be manually regulated by the user.

Memory
Type: Unknown
Size: 65238 MBytes
DRAM Frequency: 1037.6 MHz Your RAM is running well below what it should be which when at stock settings should be 2133MHz using the stock voltage of 1.35V.

Voltage
CPU CORE: 1.788 V
MEMORY CONTROLLER: 2.016 V Both of these two voltages if accurate are sky high, best I found for a stable OC for your CPU was 1.4V with a recommendation of clocking back to 1.35V the same as what your RAM should be when using the MBs default factory settings.

Chances are that the previous ASUS MB software has been tripping the system up.

The RAM frequency is the single data rate frequency - according to cpuz its running at 1066/7 which at double data rate is 2133Mhz.
The Vcore voltage according to cpuz is 0.7 to 1.1v

based on my personal knowledge and experience its clear that this motherboard is not going to achieve the rated 4.6Ghz of the CPU without significant in depth
configuration of The BIOS / Research / Trouble Shooting, and even then the 4.6Ghz will likely not be achievable.

One thing overclockers suggested, is I can RMA the CPU for a full refund withing 14 days of purchase and suggested that I go for 1 of their Motherboard + CPU + Memory combos that come pre built and tested with a garanteed 4.6Ghz overclock and a 3 year warranty.

So I am this point I am going to RMA the CPU and switch back to my Rampage V / 6850K

I will then have plenty of time to think about where to proceed from there.

So for now concider this thread RESOLVED.

Thank You very much for your time and assistance.

Maurice

Both more like it, perhaps the ASUS software that you have disabled was interfering with the Speccy program.

Not being an OCer I would not have a clue but did take the time to read the article here

Hope you have better look with your replacements and thank you for letting us know that you no longer required assistance (y)

You are welcome btw :)
