I had a problem that my internet and LAN connection would suddenly go away without warning. My friend replaced the pci-express card and then it was okay for four or five months. After the problem came back he replaced the card again. It was all right for a few months but then after a while it failed again. Even when he replaced the card it still failed almost daily.

He thought the problem might be that the power supply was "going bad" and not putting out enough power. He replaced that for me - I don't remember if he replaced the card at the same time - but after that it worked for over a year. Now it's happening again, He replaced the card but it's still happening. My friend said it could be the new card is defective but other than that he's stumped as to why it's happening. Shutting down the computer and re-starting it each time makes it work until it happens again. Can anyone think of what else could be causing this?
The computer is an Inspiron 560.

When was the last time you rebooted the modem and if there is one the router?
IF you rebooted the computer did it help for any amount of time?
Did you ever try any commands?
Have you tried resetting the modem and if there is one the router?
If there is a router then remove it and does the same thing happen if connected to the modem?
Have you tried different port on the modem and or router?
Have you tried removing the card and see if the onboard works and or if you have one of the old cards?
When you say go away does it stay connected to the network and can not hit the internet?

the modem was rebooted about ten days ago. rebooting the computer does help and it works after that but the amount of time it works has been getting shorter. I should mention that I have a second computer on my LAN and that is doing OK. So it can't be the modem and router, though I guess I should try using a different port on the modem. The original onboard connection stopped working a long time ago, which is why my friend put in the pci-express card and moved the LAN connection there.

When I said "goes away" what happens is there is no longer an internet/LAN connection. If I was on a website suddenly firefox says looking for site and the site can't be reached or something to that effect. Regarding commands, I don't know which commands you mean nor how to use them.

Maybe I need a new power supply again, as it worked for over a year after my friend replaced it.

What version of windows?
ADSL Cable Satilate
Are you using to access the internet?
Have you tried removing the card and see if the onboard works and or if you have one of the old cards?
Might not be the cards might be something running on the system that is causing the issue over time and or configuration
When this happens do the network lights stay on for the computer and or modem (where the cable connects not on the screen)?
What type of security do you have setup on you modem?
What type of security do you have setup on the computer?
Are the computer set up with Static IP address or Dynamic IP address?
Have you ran any cleaning programs on the system if so which ones?

You can download on to a working system and then copy the file using a USB drive and then run and then transfer the file that is created in the same way.

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:

Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP Configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

COPY
and PASTE the information that is created in the log in your next replay.

I don't know which commands you mean nor how to use them.
Here are the commands I was speaking about.

Using an Adminstrator command prompt

Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each command:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int reset all
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh int ipv4 reset
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh advfirewall reset
netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state ON

Reboot the computer

My friend replaced the pcii-express card, changed the cable going to the router and connected the cable to a different port in the router. It seems to have helped as it's working now. So I'm not going to do the things now that you wrote above. But I will keep all of that in case the problem comes back so I can do them. Thank you for taking the time to reply with so much detail.
