also, how are you installing Win8, from DVD or USB?
and the new drive, it's the only drive or the original drive with Windows is still installed?
how far into the setup do you get? do you get to the part where it lets you wipe all the partitions and create a new one?

I'm installing from DVD and I get pass the setup period and then to the page where it has options like new ,format etc. I haven't formatted or partitioned it yet.

All I do is remove any partitions that may already be there (shouldn't be your case as it's a new one) and leave it unformatted and let Windows do the work as it installs.
the new drive is the only drive in the system?
any reason why you wouldn't take the opportunity to upgrade to Win10?

Complete new drive, straight out of the box. Couldn't tell which socket it's connect right now. I was thinking perhaps I could use a rescue disk to load into DOS and then try formatting it to see if that helps.

Do I not have to format the drive first? Have tried to run setup again and had two different messages. One gives 0x80070017 and the other says 'Partition is to small, make size at least 8501mb or select another'

no need to format the drive, Windows will handle all that during the install.
one of the first few questions it asks during the installation process is how to setup the drive, tell it to delete all current partitions (you have to select each one and hit Delete) then continue on and it will setup the drive with a format and partitions as it deems fit.

also, don't assume because the drive is new that it hasn't been used before.
I bought a brand new one, unsealed it from the bag only to find data already on the unit.
must have been tested, refurbished or something in the factory.

My word, what a journey!!! :(

I received a new drive and managed to set everything up okay, took a while with some things taking ages to find on my old drive but I got there in the end! Thanks, appreciate everyones help, back to normal now and looking to back up everything for safe keeping!! :)
