Solved Help With Windows Media Player Recording Audio To a DVD Windows 10

Hi Everyone:
I'm hoping you can answer A DVD recording question. I thought this would be a simple
process and am sorry if I am making a stupid error.
This bothers me to no end because I have recorded and edited enough music
over the years on the computer to travel from Alabama to Wyoming.
Here we go. I have a lot of music I wanted to put on a physical product to
back up. While Flash Drives are tremendous being an Old Rocker I thought recording
Audio DVD's would be perfect. The CD only gives you 79:57 of time and the DVD
would allow at least 6-8 times the amount.
I haven't worked with DVD's in years but recall when I did the following steps got me the desired
results.
Today I opened Windows Media Player (Windows 10 Computer). Selected from the choice
Record DVD. Opened the files I wanted. The files (let us call them):
Beatles- Live 1
Beatles- Live 2
Beatles- Live 3
are all in separate folders. I knew there was going to be an issue from the get go
because when I selected the folders Live 1,2, and 3 to the Burn DVD command instead of
staying in the folders all the songs were being shown on the list as it was one long CD
recording. I thought it would be worth the chance anyway.
When it finished it was exactly what I feared. Normally when you insert a DVD you get
a menu and it shows the files on it. It should have said Beatles 1,2, and 3. If not opening
Windows Explorer-clicking CD/DVD Drive and all the folders of recorded songs should have appeared.
It ended up not only having everything lumped together but not even in order. Track 1 from Beatles 1
followed by Track 1 of Beatles 2 and not track 2 of Beatles 1.
Do you think this is a non-fixable issue with Windows Media Player or something I did
incorrectly (which I hope)?
If Windows Media Player is only set to record the songs one after the other regardless
of files would it be different in other software such as Nero or Roxio?
I seemed to recall having both of them years ago and be it a DVD Audio or Video came
up with either the choices of files to click and or an icon of the files to click.
I have received DVD-Audio discs in the past and the songs were all in separate files.
Any help from you is appreciated. I am always disappointed when I can't
figure something out especially if it is editing.

Hello Craig, made your post text smaller as yelling isn't cool.

Haven't done what you asking in years, but what your'e after is DVD authoring software way beyond Windows media players capability. Have a look HERE and on Google, heaps to choose from.:)

Thanks for reply. If I read it correctly was it as simple as I did not error (I hoped it was me). Windows Media Player although able to record/play DVD's does not have the capability to separate the files and this will always create the end result as 1 track after another without the ability to separate into folders the way DVD Authoring Software can?
The reason Windows Media Player was used was simply it came free with Windows 10 and I had hoped paid software would not have to enter the picture or the fear of free software and the risk of adware/spyware/malware.

Because you will be creating menus you desire it will be a little more involved that the very ordinary Windows media player. You should not fear or be paranoid about inheriting anything nasty when you download and install freeware files if you take the normal precautions and A/V scan anything you plan to install. Programs like unchecky can also minimize the risk of installing added extras bundled with some apps.

Do some research before you download anything if you are concerned.

Thanks for reply. I was recommended a software (free) that would record audio and keep the files separate DVDFlick. It downloaded without malware/spyware/adware warnings from the Anti Virus and Malware Bytes but did not work. Asked two friends to try the same and they had zero luck either.

Then saw good things about CDBURNERXP. As I went for the download both Webroot and Malware Bytes warned the following file contains Malware. They did not give the sometimes lesser message "May contain." I called two friends with different Anti Virus and they got the same warning as well as the alert from Malware Bytes.
It is a shame because it looks like if I wan to use the DVD Audio correctly it will end up with paid software Roxio/Nero/etc.
The sad thing about the open source is such a wonderful idea is not monitored correctly if 3 different Anti-Virus makers and Malware Bytes are telling you there is not maybe Malware included in the download. Free or not if I created something I would want to make sure if there were an issue it is taken care of.
Your help and interest as well as your level of articulation and intelligence is greatly appreciated.

Hi Craig, one way of evaluating software is to go HERE and have a read about what they say about an application. The site does say CDBurnerXp can be bundled with other software which may or may not be wanted. This is probably what your scanners picked up:)

Do you feel from your expertise that CDBURNERXP as an example was attempting to bundle software without giving me the option and that is why three different people with three different Anti-Virus and Malware Bytes got the warning message immediately? I am going to have a look at the link.

Hi Craig, I have never installed CDBurnerXP so cannot answer your question accurately. If you read the link I gave you it says it comes with Open Candy which is a form of adware. It also says it may come with a couple of other bundled PUP's (possibly unwanted programs) and maybe more junk depending where you get it from. Because I have never installed this app I cannot advise if you can opt out of the extra bundled stuff or not. Another way to often avoid the bundled junk is to use a portable version of the app where available. Better still find something better than CDBurnerXP, look at the link I gave in post number 2, that stuff will be clean.

Freeware is often but far from always bundled with other offerings in an attempt by the author to recoup what may have been considerable effort in getting their product to the masses. If you are a little nervous about freeware, and commercial apps for that matter, have a look at installing Unchecky from HERE. Warning though, no app such as unchecky can save anyone from being careless.

Thanks again for the info. There were people all over the internet not pleased with the CDBurnerXP and some the Anti-Virus did not warn them ahead of time about the issues.
In retrospect I wonder if when Open Source was first coming to the surface if it would have been better to call it 1.00 source and charge 1.00 for the software with the hope there could be enough downloads to pay for the time/effort/upkeep and not have to resort to adware/spyware/malware.

It's late here (I'm in the USA East Coast) and will take a look at that link again tomorrow. If DVDFlick would have worked for myself and friends (it was the Number 1 choice) it would have solved the issue (being Freeware).
They do list 4 other choices that I can check Tuesday.
You are a true credit to the forum and the internet. Most folks with your knowledge are condescending and not willing to share thoughts/solutions.

Hi Craig, just as an experiment I installed CDBurnerXP onto an old play PC with Windows 10 64bit. It was downloaded from the Authors site HERE and run as a 32bit installation setup. During the install (custom Installation chosen) there was no offer of any additional programs or extras, and after install, opening and looking at various settings the pc was rebooted and was scanned for additional files and or apps using an app designed to identify adware and malware traces.

Can say no additional apps or files other than the program files and registry settings were created by installing this program, and I noted in the software license agreement it stated no additional offerings would be installed without the users consent. During install the CDBurnerXP was added to Windows startup, with no option within the app to stop. but no big deal to change, and automatic updates were selected by default but able to be opted out of as per pic below.

So Craig, whether there has been changes to the packaging of the program recently or perhaps downloading it via different distributors has meant a different download package I do not know? It's always better to download from the author where possible. Just food for thought.:)

NOTE: This is not a review or endorsement of the program, merely an install experience.:)

Thanks for the detailed info CDBurnerXP. I had originally tried to download from the same link (thank you) and the second I hit the download button Webroot and Malware Bytes had an issue. As mentioned called a couple of other people with different Anti Virus and the same thing happened.
I took your advice on the Freeware link and there was a brief trial for DVD Author Plus. It has worked great. Easy to use and you can make audio CD's, Data CD's, regular DVD's, and audio DVD's. There are a couple of things that it won't do (more of a Nuisance), thus you have to handle it manually. It will not recognize the Flash Drives. If you want to record something you must place the contents on the computer first. The second is if you have files for a CD saved as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11. When it opens in the window it puts what would be tracks 10 and 11 ahead of 1. You have to manually drag each track to the Burning Section instead of all at once.

Thanks for checking in. Gus has been tremendous in his ability to explain and furnish information.
There are updates and here we go (thanks for asking). The original goal was to find a solution without cost but many of the recommended CD/DVD Authoring Software had enough adware/spyware/malware to travel from earth to the moon. An example was CDBURNERXP which not only was blocked for download on my computer by the Anti-Virus and Malware Bites but two other people I asked to try. they each had Malware Bytes but different Anti-Virus.
Then there was one that did not work. It did nothing.
Finally Gus suggested a link that had Freeware. One of the choices offered a trial version DVD Author Plus. I used it and it did everything you could want in making DVD Audio. It had the albums in separate files with correct running order as well as any photos or text. As it is recording it takes you through the process.
The only thing they need to fix and this shocked me that the developers did not put in the software is if you record a CD it will leave 2 second gaps between songs. You can not have it gapless even if it is a live recording and you want the concert experience.
Anything live for CD would still have to go through Windows but for the other projects it is terrific. It recognizes the 3 common files these days WAVE/FLAC which I use and MP3 which I do not.
The sad part of all this is places (direct site not third party) that talk about Open Source and sharing and the good of man and woman-kind offer wonderful software but it is filled with nothing but extra Red Flags. One company had great reviews for the product but the complaints about the superfluous stuff were enough to write a book.
If they are depending on donations for the time/effort (which makes sense and cents) how about software that works and doesn't harm any computer?

Hi Craig, unfortunately I am no longer familiar with authoring software as haven't used it in years. I have an extensive music collection on several NAS boxes and media apps like music monkey, pot player, and kodi have spoiled me with endless playlist options. My only suggestion is that someone else may know of an app to suit your particular requirements. My only suggestion is to try as many as you have to until you hopefully find the perfect one for you. The vast majority of freeware is malware free, and I have to say malwarebytes is very proactive flagging stuff that is not necessarily bad. I can only suggest you install unchecky and run any unknown app past "Should I remove It" before you commit to it. You could also use a 2nd opinion AV scanner to check any downloads before you open them.:)


PS, if you wish I can also give you an opinion only on the safety or otherwise of any app you are considering. Also have a look at Ashampoo Burning Studio, they have a clean free version but I don't know if the authoring options are too limited for you or not. **** good burner though.

With your help please see Post 14 I was able to get the Authoring Software. Although it was only free for a trial it was fantastic to have no Anti-Virus or Malware Bytes freaking out. I used the link you suggested (thanks) for Freeware and then ended up with DVD Author Plus.
In the future any software paid or free I am interested in would be honored to have your thoughts.
