Looking for some advice. I picked up a used Gigabit 6800xt which was crashing my PC (green screen and reboot) when I play Elite Dangerous and also stress testing it using 3DMark Steel Nomad. I initially thought it was due to the increased power requirements so I upgraded from a Corsair 650w to a Corsair RMe 850w and made sure I used 2x 8pin cables. This did not fix the issue.

So I checked the event logs and was getting WHEA 18 errors which pointed to CPU or memory. So I upgraded my Ryzen 3700x to a Ryzen 7 5700x3d and swapped my 32gb Corsair vengeance 2400 mhz memory for 32gb Gskill 3600mhz memory. No joy. I tried changing the RAM speed to 3200 to see if that made a difference but still crashing.

To rule out overheating I cleaned out the case, fans and motherboard and swapped my Wraith Prism for a Phantom Spirit SE which made no difference apart from keeping my CPU super cool. Decent upgrade anyway. So I returned the GPU and bought another one, this time a Sapphire 6800xt Nitro+. Sadly I am experiencing the exact same issue.

I’ve removed the drivers using DDU and reinstalled new ones. Still rebooting. I reinstalled old ones that were apparently stable according to a few google searches and even tried the Radion Pro drivers. Still no joy.

I’ve update the BIOS and chipset and done a windows 11 pro repair install. I’ve turn off the performance boosts in BIOS, tried installing driver only instead of using Adrenalin software.

I’ve tried undervolting the GPU, overvolting the CPU, bought new HDMI cables. At this point I’ve nearly replaced the whole computer!

The crashes don’t always occur under stress either. I can be sat in the space station doing nothing for 10 mins while I’m making food or something and I’ll come back to find myself at the windows login screen. Quick check of the event viewer confirms my of rebooted with WHEA 18 error. Using the AMD overlay my temps for CPU are around 50 and GPU temps are around 65 so I don’t think it’s overheating.

Build now after changing a few parts:
ROG Strix gaming FII motherboard B450
Ryzen 5700x3d
32gb Gskill Z 3690mhz RAM
Corsair RMe 850 PSU
Phantom Spirit cooler
Windows 11 pro
No overclocking

Given I’ve replaced the GPU, CPU, PSU and memory…. Any ideas what this could be? Just FYI I put my old 980ti back in and no issues whatsoever

Confirming, after all the hardware changes, putting the old GPU in works fine?
Replace with the new GPU and it all goes south?

From the Speccy report, it shows your C:\ drive 500GB SSD connected via a 2.5 to 3.5" adaptor, is this correct?

Hi yes works with old GPU. Having issues with this GPU but also the one I purchased prior. I can’t be that unlucky as to have 2x GPUs with same fault. C:\ is a 500gb m.2 Nvme plugged into the m.2_2 port. I only realised this after I’d put it all together. Means the PCIe my GPU is in is running on 8 lanes instead of 16 but don’t think that’s the issue. I have a new m.2 drive coming today and I will put a clean install of windows on it to see if I can proc the crash again. I will have to install either Elite Dangerous or 3DMark via Steam in order to try and proc the issue. I won’t install anything else other than drivers etc.

Sounds like a plan.
Install one thing at a time in the hopes you can narrow it down.

Your plan of attack should be something like this;
  • disconnect the rig from the network
  • disconnect old drives except the one that will have Windows loaded onto
  • install Windows then the GPU driver then the chipset drivers
  • test
  • if good, connect to web to activate Windows and get updates
  • test
  • if good, start loading your software; printer, Office, browser, games - one at a time, testing in between

Will do. System seems stable other than when playing Elite Dangerous or when stress testing with 3DMark so will have to install one of them I think to try and test its stability. With the 3DMark steel nomad stress testing sometimes it runs the full 20x test fine and passes with 99.9% and others it forces a reboot after the first few runs. I’ll report back when I’ve installed the fresh windows and tested. Won’t be till after work tonight.

So swapped out ssd for blank one with the intention of performing a clean windows install and it won’t boot at all. RGB lights on my RAM are on but nothing else. No fans or anything. I’ve swapped back to my old PSU, removed the RAM and tried 1 at a time, reseated the CPU, removed the motherboard to rule out a case short, unplugged everything other than the CPU and RAM, cleared CMOS, No joy. At this point I’m thinking maybe my motherboard was on the blink and this tipped it over the edge? I don’t have access to another motherboard so I’m going to have to buy one. At this point I’ve now pretty much replaced every part of my PC. I would have gone down the AM5 route if I knew that in advance. I’ll post an update when my new board arrives 🤦‍♂️

Ok new motherboard arrived. Clean windows install. Brand new NVME drive. Still getting the green screen and reboot. I’m at a loss now. I’ve replaced the PSU, GPU, CPU, cooler, Motherboard, RAM and NVME drive.

Has to be the new GPU, obviously then.
So same with the new mobo, old GPU in - all good, new GPU in - all crap?
Any other GPU is also crap?

Only other thing I can think of, if mobo and CPU support it, try removing the GPU and running the PC with the onboard graphics.
Next, try only having one memory stick in at a time, and try other slots.

Let's get another Speccy report with the new hardware change.

I'll see who else has ideas; @PeterOz @xrobwx71 @georgeks @Malnutrition @phillpower2

Can I be that unlucky that I have had 2 GPUs with the exact same issue? If that’s the case then I’m not going to try a third. I’ll return it and get an Nvidia GPU instead. Currently I’m running some OCCT tests on my CPU and RAM but both are brand new and the issue was happening with my old CPU and RAM so I’m pretty sure it’s not that. I’ll test my old card in there after these tests have finished. Only thing I haven’t done it update bios on the new motherboard but given I had done that on my old one and it didn’t make a difference I’m not holding out much hope.

So I returned it and picked up a 3080ti and put that in. Only had time to run 1x 20 cycle of steel nomad but it ran that fine whereas the 6800xt couldn’t get passed 4 or 5 cycles. Too early to dance naked in the street but hopefully I have a working GPU 🙌 I’ll do more testing over the weekend. 🤞
