On my computer when I have Microsoft Outlook 2021 open to my INBOX, I see several headers at the top, such as From, Subject, Received, Date etc. On my wife's computer I only see From and the Date. There are no separations at the top for me to drag etc. However, if I look at the Folders to the left, and minimize those folders, I then see several more headings in the email section. How do I get the missing headers back, without having to minimize the Folders ?? Thanks, Mike

They are either off to the side because they don't fit on the available screen space or they are simply not there.

For the first, maximise the Outlook window and see if they show up.
Or hover the mouse on the vertical bar between the column headers and see if sliding the bar to the left shows more headers.

But more likely they have been deleted and to get them back, right click on any of the current headers, select Field Chooser, and (in this case) scroll down and find Subject, and click on it and hold down and slide up to the other headers.
Where you drop it is where it'll be shown, but you can slide each header to a new location if you want to change the order they appear.

Thanks Bruce, but I am confused. If I PIN THE FOLDER PANE, or MINIMIZE THE FOLDER PANE, I see what I want. I see the FROM column, the SUBJECT column, the RECEIVED column, and the SIZE column. However if I drag that vertical bar that is now between the folders and the emails, to the right, I see the folders in tact, but I do not have any labeled columns. I do see the emails, and I see the date far to the right, but no headers.

And you have the Outlook window maximised?
What resolution is your monitor set to?
What size screen do you have?

As you drag the folder pane/messages pane border to the right, the column headers will start to auto-adjust as real estate is reduced. There should then be a horizontal scroll bar along the bottom of the column headers pane.

The Outlook window is maximized. The screen resolution is 1366 x 768. The laptop screen size is about 15 inches. Diagonally. If I have the Folders pane minimized, and put the mouse on the verticle bar between the folders and the messages, I drag the bar about half of an inch to the right, and ALL the headers disappear. The emails are still there, and at the far right, the Time is still there, but NO headers.

In the off chance Outlook has gone side ways, go to Control Panel, Programs & Features, right click on your Office entry and select Change.
Run a Quick Repair and if that doesn't fix it, try the Online Repair which basically reinstalls Office.
You won't lose any docs, emails, or settings - it does an over-the-top install.

If that doesn't fix it, take a snapshot of the issue, just to make sure we are all singing from the same song sheet.

I tried the Quick repair, did not work. If I decide to do the Online Repair, how do I do that ??

OK, I tried the Online repair. It took about 20 minutes, but no difference. If I minimize the Folders column, to about one quarter inch, I see all my headers. But as soon as I unminimize the column, I loose all headers. I was thinking of removing Microsoft Office, and reinstalling it with my CD. But then I have a lot of work setting up Outlook with the name and password and other settings.

OK, I will try to upload two pictures. AAA shows all the Folders at the left side. Inbox, Drafts, Sent. etc. But to the right of the Folders column, the Headers for the emails are gone. I see a partial message, and time. If I Minimize the Folder column, I see BBB. As you can see the Folders are gone, but now I see the email headers, such as FROM, SUBJECT, RECEIVED, SIZE, etc. Hope this helps.

Ok, it's got to be a View setting somewhere.
Try these;
  • go to Message Preview in the Ribbon and select Off. That'll remove the one line message sneak peek
  • go to View in the Menu Bar and Change View in the Ribbon and click the Single option
What happens now?

OK, I went to Message Preview, and selected "OFF"
Then I went to Change View, but I do not see an option for Single option. I only see, Imap Messages, Hide Messages, Group Messages, and Preview.

Click the Preview and we'll change it to what I hope will work.

Select Preview and click Modify.

In Columns, just have the columns you want, usually Attachment, From, Subject, Received, Size will do. And set Maximum number of lines in compact mode to 2.

In Group By, untick top box.

In Sort, select Received and Descending order.

In Filter, have nothing.

In Other Settings, I have 8pt Segeo UI, and tick box for Automatic column sizing. Set Reading Pane to Right. Down the bottom, untick Use compact layout and that should auto select Always use single line layout (this is the setting which should do the trick!). Tick Show Messages from all folders.

In Conditional Formatting, I have all ticked.

In Format Columns, I have From width set to 15, Subject set to 60, Received set to 18, Size set to 14.

Bruce, made all the change's you recommended. Most were already set to what you recommended. No difference. Maybe I should just Remove Outlook, and reinstall it. But I don't want to go through all that work, and still have the same issue. Maybe I will just have the wife live with it.

Bugger - I thought "always use single line layout" was the answer.
I got mine looking like yours, and changing that setting did the trick for me.

To confirm, you want all the Folders (as in AAA) to be shown AND all the Headers (as in BBB) to be shown at the same time?
Which is something I've always had and never had an issue changing in the past, so I'm thinking I've missed something.

Let's get some more eyes on this and hope they are Outlook users. @PeterOz @xrobwx71 @Pyro @georgeks
