Solved Windows Updates do not work for Win 7 Pro SP1 64 bit - desktop

Good day/evening, ( pc specs at bottom of thread )

Windows updates won't load or just fail ..... for about 6 months now.
PC is virus free and ran tweaking.com in December 2016 but problem remains.

Thanks for the reply. Had tried diagcab last December but wouldn't run ... pc was buggered at the time though.
Diagcab ran this time. Some things were fixed, some weren't.

Have you tried doing a Repair Install of the OS?

In addition to what Ian has asked can you do the followingl
Download then run the Windows All in One Repair (free) from here, disregard the malware guidance but follow the other steps to the letter and in particular ensuring that you first create a new restore point and perform a proper Windows clean boot before running the repair, details for the clean boot here.

I last ran Windows Repair Free in December 2016 and followed the instructions on a proper clean boot.
I'll give it a go again .....
 
Run this tool prior to running the all in one tool.
Even if you have already ran the repair tool, run it again after this tool.
Run it under a clean boot as suggested, then run it again in safe mode.

Please download Pre_Scan.
Save it to your desktop.
Disable your antivirus, and windows defender.

Close All open work Pre_Scan will close all processes to run.

Right Click Run as Admin.
Allow completion, when it completes the program will reboot your machine and open a log.
Please post that log here in your next reply.

Thanks for looking into my thread.
I've run Pre_Scan in the past without issues but this time it stalled at 40% ( C\Programfiles\All.in.One.Repairs )
AutoIt Error

Errors: Incorrect number of parameters in function call.
I ran it a second time and got the same error.
I noticed Pre_Scan had made some changes/fixed some issues, so I tried running Windows Updates and it still stalls.

What do you recommend?

A few questions if I may paulwb,

Do you have a Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit disk, if yes, can you tell us if it is a full retail disk, an OEM disk, a downloaded ISO or a burned copy (to use for the Repair install mentioned by Ian above).
You mention in your OP that the issue started 6 months ago, did you install any new software around the same time, Panda for example.
Have you run the AIO tool as suggested, if yes and the problem persists there should have been an error log produced, can you check, if yes copy/paste the log into a reply for us

Any repair logs should be found in C:\ Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\Logs

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

  • Download SupRestric.exe save to your desktop.
  • Close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable the antivirus
  • Double click the file to launch it.
  • Windows: 7/8/10 Vista and run as administrator
  • Click Yes at any prompt.
  • The analysis takes only a few moments.
  • The report is on the desktop ( CTR.txt )
  • Copy paste report in next reply.
  • A reboot is needed to complete the repairs.

You can make a clean boot easily with this tool.

Make sure that you have Pre_Scan on the desktop as well.
Right click Process close run as admin.
Select [...] Browse.
Go to the windows folder, double click it.
Then select desktop.
Right click Pre_Scan and run as admin.
See if the program will run this way.
Also, you can run the All in one tool the same way.
Just use the portable version, from here.

@gus wrote a nice guide showing how to reset Internet Explorer to default settings.

Or use the Browser Reset tool.

  • Download ResetBrowser To your desktop.
  • Now close all open browsers.
  • Right click and run as administrator.
  • Click on Reset Internet Explorer. -- Allow completion.

Might also be a good idea to reset all windows services to default.

Download Service repair tool to your desktop.
Right click run as admin.
Allow completion -- reboot if needed.
Note: If you connect via wireless you will need to change the — WLAN AutoConfig -- to run automatic this tool will disable it.
Hit the start button type services scroll to — WLAN AutoConfig -- the then right click it select properties.
Change the startup type to automatic. -- Also make sure and start the service.

Go here and grab the latest windows defender updates.
Even if you do not use it, having this updated will often times help with updates not working for some odd reason.

Also from the link above you will find MS Fix-its for update troubleshooting.
I'd suggest running the fixes provided.

1. I do have Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 disk, OEM System Builder Pack
2. Panda A/V was installed April 2015, Panda Cloud cleaner was run Nov. 2016, > my PC had malware in Nov 2016 so got a lot of help from pchelpforum and a variety of software was downloaded during that time
3. I had run the AIO tool, but uninstalled it as it conflicted with Pre-Scan - instead of stalling at 40%, Pre-Scan ( run in Safe Mode ) now stalls at 90% ( AutoIt - Error Allocating Memory ), so the AIO logs are n/a

Below is the SupRestric log.
I forgot that GWX Control Panel installed. A third party software that blocks Microsoft from secretly upgrading your computer to Windows 10. It did not interfere with Windows updates when first installed, but just in case it is now, I uninstalled it since the Windows 10 free upgrade is no longer being offered.
Pre-Scan ( run in Safe Mode ) now stalls at 90% and got AutoIt - Error Allocating Memory.
I'm going to rerun the All In One repair in safe mode and the rest of your suggestions ...

I ran All In One Repair in Safe Mode and Windows Updates are now working. I can now see my Update History and New Updates to be installed.
A few updates have installed successfully, but the Jan 2017 Security Monthly Quality Roll-up KB3212646, FAILS - Error code 80073712.

Also, do you recommend installing System Update Readiness Tool KB947821 October 2014 - 264.8 MB ?
 
I've seen lots of failures with KB3212646 which weighs in at 142.7 MB.

Try the security only quality update KB3212642. It is a 6.2MB and consists of the only security update for January.

Hi plodr, excellent advice. That update you recommended worked.
However, the Jan 2017 Security Monthly Quality Roll-up KB3212646 is still sitting there. Will it eventually disappear?
Will the Feb 2017 Security Monthly Roll Up appear in my Windows Updates or do I have to use the link you recommended to manually download future updates ?

I think it might disappear.
I don't let Windows search for updates until I tell it to. I have never installed the Security Monthly Quality rollup.
I install the Security only monthly rollup. (Oct., Nov., Dec., Jan.)

When I choose to search for updates, so far since October, it has only offered me that's month's Security Monthly Quality rollup, despite me not having installed the previous month's Security Monthly Quality rollup.
