I recently received a laptop that was never upgraded from Win 8. I need to upgrade it to Win 10 at least. My first question is: Do I have to upgrade to Win 8.1 first?

Had a problem. Used the link you posted and tried the Media Creation Tool. Everything seemed to go well until it was ready to install. It had finished step 9, and this notice popped up:
Modern Setup Host
Modern Setup Host has stopped working.
A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I recently received a laptop that was never upgraded from Win 8.

OEM (brand name) computers are notorious for not being happy upgrading from 7 to 10, 8 to 10 or 8.1 to 10, it comes down to all the pre installed bloatware that they ship with.

Best course of action is to get yourself a couple of thumbdrives, one a small capacity one that you can save the system drivers to and one around 16GB that you can download yourself a free Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft.

Post back when you have the thumbdrives and we will provide the rest of the info that you need, we will need to know the brand and model name or number of the computer so that we can find the drivers for you.

Ok. I have the thumbdrives ready. Take note: I will be pretty busy the next two to three days, but I will get done what I can as quick as I can get to it. Thank you!
I almost forgot, the laptop is Samsung NP470R5E.

See option two here for how to download a Windows 10 ISO to USB.

You can download the latest drivers from here

NB: If you can, post back here before you do the clean install, have a suggestion that could possibly save you a bit of time and trouble.

I downloaded all drivers except for all manuals and guides. There appears to be two identical drivers for Qualcomm Atheros WLAN. Same version and size. Can I delete one of them, or do I need both?

Let`s try a quick way first (it worked for me going 8.1 to 10).

Create a new system restore point.

Make sure that you have the present Windows key written down an kept safe, this in case you get asked for it which you shouldn`t.

Insert the USB ISO into a USB 2.0 port, open the contents.

Bottom of the list of contents should be setup

Right click on and then open setup

Follow the on screen instructions to install Windows 10

Once Windows 10 has been installed, try just installing the chipset drivers then restarting the computer to see what is working using Windows own drivers.

Important: Do not let Windows install any updates before the chipset drivers have been installed and under no circumstances should any RAID drivers be installed.

Ok: I don't have the Windows key handy. It's not on the laptop case. Where can I find it? What folder do I place the chipset drivers? And, I have no idea what RAID drivers are. Sorry about that.

I got to the step to open the ISO setup, but it started the Windows 10 process and a small window came up with the message "Modern Setup Host has stopped working". Windows then closed the program. I was hopeful.

That suggests that an upgrade was tried as opposed to a clean install.

Try again but this time run it as Administrator and make sure that any options that you click are not for upgrading, this will just keep all the rubbish that is on the drive and won`t work in any event if the present installation is corrupt.

Change the boot sequence in the BIOS so that when restarted the notebook will boot from USB.

Insert the USB ISO in a black USB 2.0 port.

Restart the notebook and follow the on screen instructions.

I entered Bios. It had a side bar note that to boot to usb, I was to go to the Advanced tab >> and disable Fast Bios Mode. After that, I went back to the Boot tab. There were no new options given, so I saved changes and exited. It continued booting up, but never went to the usb. It opened up to desktop.
