Windows 7 wont boot

Everything was working fine yesterday and went to shutdown the PC, which had some updates needing to be updated and installed. Clicked that and went to bed. The next day turned my computer on and it got stuck at a black screen with a flashing underscore in the top left corner. After searching the net for solutions I still haven’t found anything. The drive with the operating system shows up where it’s supposed to in the bios screen, and whenever I try to boot from it, it just goes back to the black screen with flashing underscore. I don’t have any option to start in safe mode anywhere, and I don’t have the windows 7 installation disc either. What can I do?

since you are still Win7, get into Safe Mode by hitting F8 like a **** crazy person as soon as you power the PC up.
see if going back to a previous restore point helps or even a repair reload of Windows.

There is no option for safe mode. It gives a list of devices to boot from, I select the device that has windows 7 installed and then it goes to the black screen with flashing underscore again.

We have no way of knowing how savvy folk are with computers and any associated software so we need to ask questions and request specific information.

You say that there is no option for Safe Mode, some clarity is needed here, with Windows 7 tapping the F8 key while restarting the computer would normally result in Windows 7 starting at the desktop in Safe Mode which means that only the bare essentials have been loaded, no third party drivers or software etc are loaded, at no time does a screen come up with options asking what device you wish to boot from, what you describe sounds more like the boot options area in the BIOS.

In addition to the above, two occasions were you may not be able to get into Safe Mode in Windows 7 when restarting a computer are when Windows is corrupted and/or when the HDD/SSD has issues.

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, MB, the RAM (including the amount) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable folk to better assist you.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply, it really does not help any and just makes for unnecessary reading, thanks.

Well if f8 isn't working it obviously in not seeing the O/S or boot files. This is why you get the cursor flashing I guess (looking at my crystal ball) download Hiren’s BootCD PE x64 here https://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ boot off the live windows 10 and once it boots run Lazesoft Windows Recovery see it it can fix the boot issue.

Or if you have windows 7 cd boot off that and repair like it says here
