Solved Windows 7 to 10 upgrade

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hi guys i have a couple of questions regarding my old hp laptop. i have searched the forum and found some information but decided to post this.

It's running Windows 7 ... so should i upgrade to 10 ? what are my risks in not doing so?

Is this even possible due to the age of my computer and system specs?

I have attempted to download the upgrade but have come up with an error hence the post. I'd rather not attempt this and start downloading tools to fix or repair things to blindly try get this done.

error 0x80072F8F - 0x20000

searched & ended up here :

Specs:

Hp Pavilion dv6 notebook
Intel Corei7 CPU Q720 @ 1.6Ghz
4gb Ram 2.99 usable
32 bit

Thanks Sean

Upgrading to windows 10 is your decision remembering that Windows 7 is no longer supported with security updates and or safe to use over the internet.

The FAQ is toward the bottom of the screen

Do you have another system that you can use to download the file and create the install drive with?

Yes i do have another computer to do this with.

I would like to stay up to date with virus and software updates.

Is there still a free upgrade available or is that a load and i'd be better off spending the 225 on the upgrade.

Is it a definate that my system would support the upgrade?

Others may have more to state on this.

Would support the upgrade yet it may be a little slow. I have heard of users upgrading lesser systems.

You may want to look at the specifications for Windows 10.

Free upgrade available depend on where you get the information. According to t the Microsoft site that I sent you no. Some other places stated differently which if you look at the dates written.
We do not currently offer free upgrades from Windows 7 to either Windows 10 or Windows 11. If you want to purchase a copy of Windows 10 or Windows 11, please see links above or contact a retailer to find out about options. Note: The upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is currently free.

Since you have another system why not create the install media there and use it onto the windows 7.

Then download the windows 10 tool – Minimum 8gig USB required

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

and use that to reinstall windows.

Have only one drive connected

*** NB A reinstall will delete all data from the drive***

If doing an upgrade to a new install you need a product key from Win 7 or 8.

Here is an excellent youtube video on how to install win 10 from usb

How To Install Windows 10 From USB - YouTube

Before doing any install, it is a good idea to go to the support page for your system. Download the drivers you are going to need ie chipset, sound, video, wireless, etc. While win10 has a lot of native drivers, microsoft drivers are designed for ease of use and are NOT designed for any type of performance. Store these drivers on another usb or you can even just make a folder on your install usb when you are finished making the install usb. Copy the drivers into that folder.

When you are finished with the install, then install your drivers. Install the chipset first then the rest of them. Reboot each time when prompted.

Thanks Rusty i will look into the specs and if i have to pay for it i will to get this sorted.

Pete I have the product key for Win 7 and will check the support page and download the driver updates when i go ahead.

I'll need to get onto it when i have an hour spare to check it all out.

Thanks so far guys
