Please see attached screenshot.
With DVD in "D" drive, when I right click you will see "Open With" is missing.
Can it be added to menu? If so, can you please assist?

what if you hold down Shift when right clicking?
that use to be the way, many OS'es ago, but Win10 changed that.
my guess it it is not showing because there is not associated software for the video format in the tray.
what DVD playing software is installed?

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for response.
Shift/right click doesn't work.
Apart from VLC, I also have Pot Player which as you can see doesn't show in menu.
Windows Media Player doesn't play videos anymore in Win 10.

go to the MS Store and search on DVD.
see if one of those free apps will do what you want.
or just go to Cyberlink PowerDVD and download the free version of that.
pretty sure they offered it for free or at least enough of a trail that it'll give you something to go on with your issue.

then of course you can always try a reg hack like this; https://www.howtogeek.com/261076/ho...n-on-the-windows-10-right-click-context-menu/

Hello Roger, is this a new install of Windows? if so try this. Go to VLC and open the file in that program, and do the same for pot player. Sometimes Windows needs to open files in an app first to build a "open with" menu.

Bruce,
Thanks again, but I don't need another player.
Tried the registry hack, but the "open with" entry is already in the reg.

Hello again Gus,
Tried what you suggested - no change.

What I would like to see in the menu is "open with" or "play with potplayer"

Even if I go into Default Programs and set Potplayer as default video player, the DVD still opens in VLC, and the right click menu only offers me play with VLC.

Even though the "open with" entry may be in the registry did you check the value as per Bruce's link. The value is important.

Here's another explaining the same.

Thanks Gus,
Tried registry again as per your (and Bruce's) instructions.
Things are as they should be.

Please see attached registry screenshot.

Gus,
Came across the following whilst searching Internet for possible answers -" Default Programs Editor"

I have not tried to use it yet, I was hoping you could give it a good eyeball and possibility let me know if it would possibly solve any of the problems??

Before you resort to reinstalling Windows

Try creating a new account

The program you referred to "Default program Editor" needs to have Open With working. Setting default apps can easily be done by going to settings/apps/default apps/choose default applications by file type, and change whatever suits you.

If the above does not help will leave you with Bruce. no need for too many fingers in the pie.

Bruce,

Ran sfc /scannow twice - it came back with the following:

"Windows resource did not find any integrity violations"

Can repair/reload be done without going back to scratch? (I don't want to go through the bother of backing up/re-installing programs etc?)

If I insert DVD it opens with VLC even though potplayer is set as the default player???
I have managed to get potplayer onto the autoplay list - so now if I right click open autoplay, I can select potplayer to play disk.
The next time I insert a DVD it opens with potplayer.

i guess you are up to the stage now where you either live with it and work around it or deem it's annoying enough to go the next step.

yes, you can do a repair install of Win10 which just reloads the OS and leaves your files alone.
if you deem this step necessary, click Start and start typing reset, that'll find Reset this PC which you click on to start the process.
you'll have to reload your programs though.

Bruce/Gus,

Many thanks for all your efforts, but I guess I'll just knock it on the head and live with it.

BTW does your own DVD right click menu include "open with" and "play with...………" options. Just wondered??

Sorry to have bothered you both. (y)

no bother at all Roger, that's the whole idea of the forum.
you learn, we learn, it's a happy little merry-go-round of help.

bloody hell! - I have to find a CD/DVD to put in my drive now to test it for you (dude - who uses these things anymore? :) just kidding)

OK, with a DVD inserted, right clicking the Drive shows no Open With...
click on any of the files on the DVD does.

I always have Auto Play OFF but I can configure it to autoplay using a number of apps.

Open with does not appear with a dvd drive, or any drive for that matter. As far as I know its only available in the context menu when you right click a file which has an extension. I dont think there is anything amiss in your pc with "open with"

When DVD drive is right clicked
