Solved WIN10 May updates has killed my PC! - BOOTREG MDR

Hi all,



I am crawling the walls trying to fix this issue with Microsoft offering zero support apart from copy and pasting crap I already know.



The PC completed the update, restarted and then I was faced with BOOTREG MDR missing.



I created a boot up on my USB, went to 'start-up repair' and it didn't work.

I then tried 'Uninstall Updates', it didn't work

I then tried 'system restore', it didn't work.

I then tried the CMD using the following




  2. BOOTREC /FIXMBR

  4. BOOTREC /FIXBOOT

  6. BOOTREC /scanos

  8. BOOTREC /rebuildbcd

and that also failed.



Then I tried reinstalling windows on a different partition having located a partition I did years ago which has 100% space (70gb), but when I went to custom and selected the drive, im told I can't use it! In fact I cant use any partition on any drive, so I cannot move forward and even do a win10 reinstall!



I have some art files ive recently created and I don't want to lose them. In addition I don't want to lose photoshop and illustrator because I inherited them from my old job of which I don't have the serial numbers for.



Is there anyway I can fix this issue and get back on my PC?



Any help would be very much welcomed

Try using a live version of Linux to get the art and other personal documents that you wan to keep and store them on to an external drive.

Once that is done use the Windows 10 install media and delete all the partitions then install Windows 10.

Then just reinstall the Drivers starting with the chipset and programs.

UPDATE:

So after tons of reading an experimenting I finally decided to purchase a SSD and install windows and start again.

Now the odd bit:

I install the new SSD and whack WIN10 on now probs. I then plug one of three HDD drives to check which drive had windows installed. The second drive I plugged in, when I powered up started to repair the G: drive (don't ask lol) which contained my corrupt operating system. I then unplugged my SSD and booted up with just my old HDD plugged in, low and behold the operating system booted and there was all my old files!

No idea why its taken me to install a new SSD and a brand new windows install for it to then fix the old operating system on my old drive.

Anyway, £40 later I have a new a SDD, a much faster boot up time and all my old files.

Glad to hear you got it sorted and thanks for posting how for the benefit of others (y)

As you have found computers can be fickle and many would say that adding Windows to the mix makes things even more unpredictable :confused:
