Solved Which SSD and what memory?

Turn off secure boot see if that give you access.

When you select Boot #2 and hit enter what does it do?

Since you have done the update did that help?

Has the Bios been saved to defaults?

Have you reset the BIOS to factory?

We'd have the problem of not being able to boot from the installation CD.
Have you tried F12 during the post to see if you can access the one time boot to other device function?

NOTE: With some BIOS's the can be changed to a different Function key and or may need to be activated in the BIOS.

With secure boot off, I didn't see any changes and I still had the same 3 boot options.

Again, the only 3 options for booting are Windows Boot Manager, NIC IPV4, and NIC IPV6. The boot options #1, #2, and #3 thing is just so you can rearrange those options.

I did the update before I received the SSD so I don't know... for some reason, I recall being able to boot into a live CD with Ubuntu on it with the old BIOS but I'm not sure if that was because there's a "hidden option" or if it's just the old BIOS not being a crap sack.
Have you reset the BIOS to factory?
I restored the BIOS settings to the default and nothing has changed.

F12 just brings up the boot option list with the same 3 boot options.

Turn on the Legacy BIOS.

Also to enter your BIOS do you enter in a password?

What is the model of the Dell?
Can I give you a hug? Turning the legacy BIOS on gave me full options to boot from anything I wanted and change the boot order with all the things. Now I can boot from my disk with Acronis True Image just fine.

It's cloning right now, but while it's doing that, I've thought of a question. How can you tell when an SSD is on its last legs? I know you have disk health and everything for HDDs with S.M.A.R.T., but how about SSDs?

Well technically, there's nothing to defrag... it's solid state. But I imagine Windows doesn't care and won't stop you, so it's good that we know that. Anyway, I've completed the installation of my 250gb Samsung 850 EVO SSD and 8gb of Crucial Ballstix 1600mhz 8gb (2x4) RAM, and the lapto ppowers on efforetlessly (after restoring BIOS settings). The way I measured my startup time difference was by adding Google Chrome and Microsoft Word to the startup list, so even after Windows booted, it'd have to launch those 2 programs. The startup time with the old setup was 2 minutes and 25 seconds, and the startup time with the new setup is 56 seconds. Shutdown time went from 28 seconds to 12 seconds. I will post my new benchmark later, and then we can finally call this thread solved.

Yes Dougie, tried it and it seems very good. I originally put on the Samsung magician stuff but soon removed it.

Oh there is another one too called ssd-z, which is also portable and gives good info about the drive.

Actually you got it right in post 25 rustys..:)
Lol yeah, i was reluctant to do that because of the message the computer was giving me about not being able to boot if I changed that setting. It was right, but just restoring it after cloning thru DVD fixed it.

That's fine. I have seven SAMSUNG 850 Evo's. I have Samsung magician on all. I like it because it tells you more than Samsung magician.
Whatever rocks your boat, Gus.
I use Samsung Magician because it tells me all I need to know. Terabytes written and the S.M.A.R.T. status.
