Western Digital External Hard Drive (back up)

Hello,

I have a couple WD external storages drives that I have not used for a long time, and now they no longer work, or I cannot access the data saved on them.
Is there any way to retrieve the data even though they do not power up any longer?

I'm really surprised they both no longer work any more.

Thank you.

This could be caused by many things unfortunately.

Have you tried them on another pc?
Are you using the correct power supply for the drives?
Do any lights come on on the drive when plugged into the pc and power?
What sort of computer and operating system were they last used on?

Sorry about so many questions, but they may help.

Yes data can sometimes be retrieved from dead drives by specialist companies but it is horrendously expensive.

In addition to what has been advised by gus

Being WD devices you should be able to remove the drives from the housing and do one of the following, fit the drives into a desktop computer to see if Disk Manager picks them up, get yourself an appropriate third party USB HDD enclosure or adaptor, the drives will most likely be the SATA type but both USB HDD enclosures and adaptors are available that have both types of port.

This is what Phillpower2 is refering to, or similar.

These docks take 2.5 and 3.5 hard drives in both sata and ide, as well as flash cards and USB drives, very clever and there are shedloads of them on Ebay, and cheap as chips
