Did the indicator show green/OK?
If you wish to continue troubleshooting just post back.
I've lost track. Let me make sure I might have left out details, the recovery went thru without any hitches, finally. I tried to update windows for the old updates, that's when the error code came up, couldn't update, (80072 efe) but then I got to a screen that showed it already had updated all the available updates. I guess they were saved on recovery disk and loaded them. I believe I saw W8 no longer have updates, and that's where the error code came in? PC ran for about 8 hours no problem, then froze, sometimes it will freeze right after booting then sometimes hours. Mouse froze, keyboard froze. But PC still active, YouTube still running, or a game, not disk game, Facebook game, still moving around on screen. Then it will freeze just on startup/desktop screen. Should I use tool your refered to still? Thanks for your patience and help.

what is the update error.

How are you connecting to the internet?
If WiFi try directly connecting via Cable to the Modem

Was there any problems during the running of the recovery disk?

How old is this system?

No issue running the disk, it was an update error, after I got everything running I tried to update, they were already on disk, and guess no more updates for W8. The PC is about 6 years, but not much use, and I did put in a new hard drive under a year ago. I know PC is past prime, but hoping since it didn't get a lot of use, it would still have some life.

ran tool, performance and health-100 % Temp status- good s.m.a.r.t - all had "ok" status
didn't know if should post report? I couldn't find it again anyway.
Also, Windows 8 didn't work as good as I thought, and since it still froze anyway, put back to Windows 10, after all that......
Thanks

I did, it froze once or twice, but still will run for hours, then a random freeze, or upon startup. I also ran malware and anti virus, etc....all clear. At a loss, considered mouse malfunction, but the keyboard wont work in the freeze state either. what do you think? Cursed......?

Disable any third party antivirus.
Run Malwarebytes to rule out malware.
Ensure you’re downloading the updates via Ethernet connection rather than wifi.
Have you tried resetting the update components?
Open cmd prompt/powershell with admin & enter:
Net Stop bits
Net Stop wuauserv
Net Stop appidsvc
Net Stop cryptsvc
Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DataStore.bak
Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download Download.bak
Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
Del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"
Net Start bits
Net Start wuauserv
Net Start appidsvc
Net Start cryptsvc
Restart the PC & try updating again.

And/or:
Search for services.msc & find Windows Update & ensure it is set to Automatic.

Did you do a fresh install or over windows 8
some times installing over a previous version of windows can cause incompatibilities.

Where did the install media for Windows 10 come from and how was it created?

Lets see if we can get it un-cursed. :X3:

Like I stated before it could be a faulty DVD drive.

Is this a Laptop or Desktop

Is this a prefabricated system or one that you (someone) built

knowing the specs and make and model.
(If you are not sure we can runs a program to get that information)

With it being about 4 years old there may be some parts that may need to be replaced or just re-seated.

Do not know how comfortable you are on working on the inside of the system.

Bought at Best Buy, I created the recovery disk. Updated to W10 before I replaced bad hard drive, used the recovery disk. It recovered to Windows 8, no problems, then I reinstalled W10 thru key I found in registry. Not long after a freeze here and there. I thought compatible issue even though worked b4, that's y I went back to W8 just to check, but froze anyways, so I went back to W10. Also On the report it said PC had estimate 1000 days or more of life. I'll get specs. Not real comfortable working inside PC, or outside of it actually, only did the Hard drive, and then some ram on a different one while back. Dell Inspiron one 2020 / [x64-based pc] /Processor [intel(r) pentium (r) CPU G2020T @ 2.5 ghz, 2 Core (s)
2Logical processors / Stopped here, not sure if thats enough info, right info, or if i should keep going? I know i have seen a smaller category with more condensed info.....maybe?

on the "windows update" in services, it says "manual" (trigger start)
on "windows update medic service "(manual)

Also On the report it said PC had estimate 1000 days or more of life.
What report

Those are correct

Lets see how the system responds after what @Bastet has you do.

What is the BIOS version you are running?

What did you use to install Windows 10?

You would uninstall Norton then run the Norton remove & reinstall tool, choosing remove only under advanced options.
Uninstall MalwareBytes & also running their removal tool, then restart the PC & then try updating again.

done, it listed this, i tried to expand, but it just unchecked, so you will probaly know rest/ Detections-1 -[pup.op button] [potential.... Ted program] [cant read my own writing] location-software\wow64 it gave the option to quarantine, so I did. Look like anything troublesome? thx

If you posted a screenshot then it didn’t work. What program is stating there’s a problem?
Malwarebytes, a results box on screen was running, at end it just had that result, and quaritneen option. Locale-HKLM software wow 64 be23-99791bff87d6, that's everything it showed. That's not the/a problem then I guess?
