Want to build/set up my own router, is a Rasp-Pi B+ strong enough?

My household is sick of dealing with the comcast router, and I'm looking at my options as far as a diy router. I could drop $200 on a mini pc like the Qotom Mini PC J1900, but before I do that I'm wondering if I could just use my Raspberry Pi B+ that's collecting dust. I also saw this article for a $55 module for the Pi on ArsTechnica. The CM4 Router Board. But I neither know if its necessary or compatible, and it would probably take me a while to learn what I was doing.

Anyone ever go down this route? I would much rather get something small and lower power consumption than use one of my old desktops, I'm sure it would be deemed "unsightly" and "unacceptable".

just to make sure we are getting the terminology correct, when you say you want to build your own router, do you mean your own network controlling switch that than plugs into your modem that connects you to the internet?
how do you connect to the web now, what is the make/model of your modem/router?

Why not just purchase an external router and use that.

Could be that they gateway that you have is old and showing wear.

Yes have to agree their Gateways a garbage which is why I have always factory reset them then reconfigure them to my liking. Helps slightly and makes them more stable to me.
