Vlan Help

Hello all,

I am designing a small network for my Church and need to segment the network for the different departments. I have a Cisco switch which is capable of being configured for VLANS, my question is if I set up the network so that each department (Media computers, Office, Guest Wifi etc.) is on a seperate VLAN will that provide adequate isolation of devices so that windows file shares etc. won't be visible for machines on different VLANS?

Also, do I set different IP ranges for each VLAN and and assign static IP addresses to machines? or should I use DHCP?

Hope this makes sense, any help and input will be much appreciated.

can't help on the VLAN side of things, but are you trying to make this harder than it needs to be.
first up, does this network have a Server running a Domain Controller - if so, that would be the best way of controlling who has access to shared folders.
or if you are only trying to limit access to certain files by certain people, what about a cloud solution - say DropBox or OneDrive.

No, the network will not be running a server, so no domain controller/domain setup.
I was thinking more of the need to segment the network so that the office computers cannot see the Media computers or people who use the guest wifi cannot see other machines.

Cloud solution might potentially work but I am still concerned about different parts of the network being able to be browsed even when network discovery is turned off.

Or am I just being paranoid and as BRUCE said "making it harder than necessary" ?
